Ok, I give up on the MXL V63. The modestly priced mics that I am considering are SP-B1, SP-C1 and MXL V93. The MXL I can hear at Mars, but I am unable to audition the SP mics. Is there a big difference between the C-1 and B-1? Worth the extra $$$? Anyone compared these to the MXL mics mentioned above? I am needing good vocals, and if the mic would also be good on acoustic guitar that would be a plus.

I'd think any of the mics you mentioned would be a good choice.

Yea, the C1 is a noticeable step up from the B1, as it's price wouild indicate.

The v93 and the C1 are comparable in terms in quality, though they sound quite different. The C1 might give you a slightly better vocal sound, but then it all depends on the voice. I suspect you'll like the v93 a lot more on accoustic guitar, though.

The v93 is slightly brighter and the C1 slightly darker. Both good mics, though.

Well, that's a tough recommendation as any of those mics are a giant step up from the V63. I'm not sure I'd agree with Chesrocks statement that the C-1 is a better mic than the B-1. Regardless of the price difference, they're really just different good mics & I suspect one will sound better in some applications while the other will sound better in other applications. The B-1 is neutral sounding enough to be very versatile as an all around instrument & vocal mic whereas I get the impression the C-1 is aimed more at being a killer vocal mic, though some people claim to have gotten decent results with it on other things as well..

All that being said, in your case I think it might be best to push Mars to do an exchange for the V93, even if you have to sacrifice a restocking fee or something, I think if you push them & upgrade to the V93 they'll go for an exchange. It's a great sounding mic IMO. If you've tried it & like it, go for it. You know what you're getting then. The B-1 & V93 are in a similar class & sound IMO but the V93 may have a little more vocal sheen.

Plus it's more resistant to rumble and plosiveness. And it has a bass rolloff switch. And a -10 db pad. And it comes with a real shockmount (In comparison, the B1 comes with: Foam wind screen, Zippered Bag, Mic Clip - Wow).

:D Don't mind me, I'm just auditioning for the job of mxl plant. How am I doing?

Gee, I thought you already had the gig  . You can put me down for a reference if you need one :) .

Yeh, I tend to ignore extra little doodads like bass roll off & -10dB pad as I have enough in line doodads like that laying around that I don't need 'em on my mic's & I can make 'em up for about a dime a dozen if need be so I forget it means somethin' to some people. The external shockmount however is a rather expensive extra little doodad. :)

Thanks for the well reasoned advice guys. I think it'll be the V93, especially if I can get Mars to do anything for me on the exchange.
And, the bass roll off, pad and shockmount will be important to me as well. It's also good news to hear that any of these mics will be a significant step up from the V63.

Funny how things go sometimes. Just thought I'd post what happened for the record. Mars gave me full credit for the V63 even though I was way past their return policy time. I listened to the V63 & V93 and couldn't hear much difference. (my ears, what can I tell you) So, after doing a little further listening I ended up with an audio-technica 3035. Did a few quick re-takes of a vocal I was unhappy with when I used the V63, and voila! There it was, the smooth round tone I was looking for, and yet open sounding too. Cool. But I must admit, the V63 was pretty good on the acoustic guitar.

I must say I'm a little surprised you couldn't here much difference between the V63 & V93 as the difference is quite profound to my ears. I suspect it had a lot to do with the test setup at Mars & you would have been satisfied had you gotten it home to record with, but never the less you made another good choice & vocal preferences vary a great deal so best to take all recommendations with a grain of salt & best to try & hear for yourself.. Glad to hear all worked out to your satisfaction. :)

I've seen the AT 3035 only on pictures, but I noticed that it looks *very* similar to my SP B1. Does anybody know if the two mics are related in any way?
