The Marshall V57M on sale at musiciansfriend.com for 59.99 seems to be another one of those rebranding of another MXL mic for Mars Music that musiciansfriend picked up the stock of in the bankruptcy. (like the V93M is the 2003)

My question is, does anybody know which of MXL's regular mics the V57M is, and while you're at it is it a great deal at $59.99 or not?

(edit)Based on spec and picture comparisons I am thinking it is most likely either the 1006 or v67

ok, having looked some more at the selections at musiciansfriend it would seem that the V63M is the rebadged 1006 since it comes both in phantom powered and battery powered models just like the 1006.

It also seems like the body style on the V57M is like the cylindrical body style on the V67 than the somewhat conical style on the 2001. So I am guessing that the V57M is the rebadged V67

Still, does anybody know for sure?

The specs on the 57m are exactly the same as the 1006, down to the weight, body size, and finish color (champagne). I am almost certain that the 1006 and the 57m are the same. The Mars version of the 67 was the black 67m.

I know that the V57m is NOT a rebadged V67. I bought one for my son to use a while back. It was dry sounding for lack of a better word, but I can't remember much more about it cause I just messed with it for a few minutes.

Unfortunately, I don't know which MXL mic is its equivalent.

Actually with the exception of body color the physical specs of the V67 and the 1006 and the 57m. It is also very clear that the body styles are different between the 2001 and the 57M.

But based on crawdad's observations it would leave us with the 57M as not being a rebadged anything, but a mic which shares the body of the V67 and 1006 but the electronics I am guessing of the 2001 or maybe the 990. Either way it seems that nobody loves this mic for any reason other than the price.

Ehhh, yes and no. I own two of these, and recorded a whole album with them (along with several other mics, including ECM8000's, SM57's, e602, etc.) They're not particularly inspiring mics, but they did a decent job on male vocals that were, for lack of a better word, "rustic" -- on pitch, but a little ragged around the edges. However, the big surprise was that they were fantastic as drum overheads, beating the ECM8000's by a mile. (My room isn't all that great for drums, and the ECM8000's emphasized that.) The V57M's had a nice shimmery sound to them, and I got a really beautiful, spacious, 3D sound.

I ended up using them on vocals, drum overheads, percussion (bongos, tambourine, and shaker), and acoustic guitar (buried in a rock mix, not featured). I also used them sparingly as room mics on electric guitar, paired with a close-miced SM57.

Would I buy them now that the V67 is $99? Probably not. But they're not completely useless, and I'm pretty happy to have them.

Oh, and yes, they are just rebadged 1006's. They're identical, physically and sonically.

Hmmmmm... Sounds like a good candidate for the Scott Dorsey or David Royer mod...
Hmmmmmm...:D

The V57 is a V63 is a 1006. It was originally intended to go to Mars. The only difference is the writing on the bottom ring.

Brent, Do you have a handy MXL model reference chart? I seem to have lost my MXL slide rule.

I keep the reference chart on a coffee table I made using the MXL color wheel. Unfortunately, with the advent of the MCA line, it collapsed.

Does it have tha same capsule as the MXL 2001? Looks like the electronics are different because it's "transformerless".

I've had a lot of good results with this mic. I like it for strummed acoustic guitar, harmonica, amps and rock or blues vocals. At that price, it's a good buy.

Yup, same capsule.

Thats really funny.. because the prices are different too.:p

MXLV57M = $59.99
MXLV63M = $79.99 (I have one of these)
MXL 1006 = $99.99

SoMm

Brent- What is the difference between the V93 and V67. Is it just the HP and Pad?

Yes, if they really are the same then the V57M is a real bargain. That was really what started me on this topic.

Oh, and texas...I am quite certain that the 93 is a rebranded 2003 so there is differences in the capsule and electronics. From what others have described the 2003 is bright, occasionally harsh, and has a very wide frequency response.

Yeah, it's the same as the 2003. I've got one and like it. I'm just curious what the differences were technically between it and the V67. They have a very similar sound but the V93 is a little more versatile with the extra features.

As I recall the spec sheets the 2003 has a slightly larger 3mm diaphram instead of the 6mm diaphram. If I understand the physics of it the thinner diaphram is even more livlier. The frequency response charts are quite different, as is the dynamic range.

Right now I am trying to decide between the 57, 67, and 93

I would go with the V93 out of those choices. I've got some raw tracks in the MP3 clinic and everything was recorded with the V93 and a 57 if you want to check it out.

My only complaint about the V93 is that I wish the high end was a little smoother. I've been thinking about getting a Ribbon mic to help with that.

Interesting, the 93 has had few friends here. I noticed that in another thread you said that you are even liking it over the fabled SP1
