Here's the buzz over at Tascam's forum:

"Hey guys,

Today is the first day of NAMM, at which we are announcing v2.0 for the 788. The new features include:

1) WAV file import and export - You can use the approved CD-R drive or an external hard drive for this. (For the tech heads - ISO-9660 and FAT-16 formats will be used so you can get into Mac and PC machines.)

2) Import PREMASTER into project - As you know, your PREMASTER is currently the final mix. In v2.0, you'll be able to capture the PREMASTER mix and bring it back to the session. All you guys that wanted to process your mix, or get past a 6x2 bounce... now's your chance!

3) Use up to 64GB drives - The size of a usuable partition has increased from 4GB to 16GB. So, with 4 partitions on a drive, that means you can use drives up to 64GB in size.

If memory serves, the maximum size of a song is still 4GB, so you can't yet make a song that is 16GB in size. This only really matters for live recording. In that case, you can simple start a new song and hit record again. I think 64GB works out to 16 hours of 8 tracks at 24 bit, or 24 hours of 8 tracks at 16 bit.

4) Burn multiple CDs - When the 788 finishes burning an audio CD, it will ask you if you'd like to burn another copy. It will use the same disc image, thus saving you the time of setting the CD up for each copy and waiting for disc images to be assembled. You'll go right into the 4x burning for the second copy and on.

5) Null Pan - v2.0 adds a nice little feature that allows you to center the panning on your main mixer channels by pressing SHIFT + SELECT for that channel.

6) Time Remaining "Gas Guage" - Many of you have asked for a display which shows me how much space you've got left on your drive. The 788 will display this on the home screen, so it'll always be where you can see it.

This update is free for anyone purchasing the 788 from today (January 17th) forward. For users who bought the 788 before January 17th, the update will cost $29.99. We'll have ordering information available soon. The update will be available late March.

Hope this helps.

Pat"

I wonder if I'll go for it........Haven't had any lock ups to date and I'm not really looking forward to one.

Maybe I'll wait and see who's 788 pukes its guts up.

Yes I saw it and since the little sucker dropped about 5' to the studio floor today a big hard drive might well be in it's future since the upgrade can handle it. Sounds like a fair enough deal for $30. The null panning and gas guage are long overdue. Still, without a digital in I'm not sure how much longer this machine will be usefull.

Well I think this is brilliant, but I can't believe they didn't put in some kind of immediate verify option for data backups considering they generally take so effing long to do and don't always work. Course you can't satisfy everyone though

Rich ;)
