I am planning on using one of these mics to record some guitar or bass but I had a few questions. I got a v-tech a few years ago from a music store that said it is the same thing as an SM57. Somehow I am having doubts now. Would I be better off getting a real SM57? I also have an SM58. Would that do, or would the straight SM57 be better. Thanks!

The SM57 and SM58 are more or less identical mics except for the grill. If you have a 58, take the ball off and voila you have an SM57 for all intents and purposes. And no, a V-tech mic is not the "same thing". Far from it. I'll cry it you tell me it has a 1/4" plug and a convenient integrated cable.

No, the V-tech doesnt have the 1/4 plug. Thanks for the info though! I bought the v-tech when I was much more gullible.

I had some V-Tech mics when I started in music production just over a dacade ago. I was a college student with a VERY low budget and a newbie on top of that. The SM-57 is heads and shoulders above the V-Tech. The V-Techs are extremely Dull sounding with almost NO detail.
