I'm looking for one around the $1,000 mark. I don't want a module, it's all about the keys.

Any recommendations? I've been looking at a Korg MS2000. It's all I've seen so far within my price range.

Check out second hand Clavia Nord Lead 2's too. Around $800-900 on eBay.

Or, cheaper and almost as good: Fully expanded Nord Lead 1's are good too. ($600-700) (Unexpanded have only 4 voices, fully expanded they have 12. The Nord Lead 2 has 16).

Then you have the Yamaha AN1x, which goes for $400-500 on eBay. I have only fiddles with it briefly, but it seemed pretty cool to me.

Theres also the Roland JP-8000s and JP-8080s.

I recently got myself a JP-8080 and its quite nice =), but it seems the JP-8080s need a Ext. Keyboard to get the most out of them and use the sequencer..

Get the ms2000. If I had to get rid of all but one of my keyboards and didn't consider price, I would keep the ms2000. It is by far the best value va out there. You won't be sorry.

second all the synths mentioned. first on the list would of course be the nord lead 2, then the an1x. i don't think as far as VA's go it get's better than the nords, well- except for the viruses :)

For $1800, you could probably find a used Waldorf Q or an original Access Virus.

IMO either would sound better than the JP8000 or MS2000.

You could get a virus b for considerably less than 1800, and a nord 2 is about 1000. An ms2000 is 500. So that kinda puts em in 3 different categories.
Your right about just about anything sounding better than a jp8000, but your gonna be hard pressed to beat an ms2000 for 4-500 bucks.
And it's not a matter of one sounding "better" really. They are all unique and each have their own little special things they do well.

You're talking American prices guys. Shit is more expensive on this fair Isle. A new MS2000 is 1,000euros, which is roughly the same as $1,000. I might take a look at a second hand Nord Lead alright.

I agree with subtractor.

It may not be the most powerful VA synth out there, but the MS2000 sound more "analog" than any other I've tried... even synths costing 5x.

Which is a Wavetable synth and really not a V/A. :) But sure, it has sine/square/saw waves too, right? So I gueess you could use it to emulate a virtual analog. :)

I suppose you could call that a V/V/A synth and that's confusing.

I'm going for the MS2K. Listened to some demos, very warm analogy sound. Just what I'm looking for. I don't think the low polyphony will limit me too much. I'll be using it to add an electronic element to a largely guitar based band, I think it'll make a nice addition.

Next question.

Korg CX3 and Nord Electro? Both sound too good to be true, do they live up to the hype.

I agree chilled.
I don't know about the korg, but the electro is about as good as it gets if your looking for smooth electric piano and organ sounds. I personally prefer the lead3 for the money. It's more versatile and has some of the same great sounds. ;)
