Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
here is a little info I stumbled on today for those of you interested in the MXL V-93/2003. Check out this test and results at:

http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/FT_Mic1.html

The method of the test and result are beyond my technical skills, but the graphic results make the V-93 look awfully close to the Neumann.

Oops--should have said compared to the Neumann TLM 103...well you get my drift I hope. :D

The vertical scale in that test really needs to be streched out a little bit, but the results are similar to what I found.

I said, "Marshall MXL-2003 $399 I thought the MXL-2003 sounded pretty smooth overall. Alex thought it had a little less bottom than the TLM-103, but a little more hi mids and top end than a TLM-103."

He said, "Note the results!
1) The MXL-2003 mic is a little 'brighter' from 3Khz on (about +3db).
2) The TLM-103 mic is a little 'heavier' from 50hz to 100hz (about +1dB).

Our testing was a lot more informal, but we came up with exactly the same results.

I just bought a V63M for 79 bucks at mars because it was affordable as my first homeowned condensor mic, I cannot for the life of me find any specs on this mic...Harvey, do you have any historical knowledge you would like to share with me....Pretty Please? Mucho thanks :0)

Peace,
Dennis

Dennis,

Sorry, but I don't have a clue as to what the V63M is. I've never seen one or heard it.

Thanks anyway Harvey,

I imagine that based on my prior experiences with purchases, its either trash, in which no one recommends its usage, or its so pathetically rare its just short of not existing. The only difference is I didn't pay list price like I usually do. Maybe after I get it I can do some tests and take some pictures. New toys are better :0)

Peace,
Dennis

Atomictoyz--I have seen the V63 but don't know much about it. Cosmetically, it looks just like the V67M. My uneducated guess is that it is the same diaphragm element with maybe a different set of electrical components. Seems to be a Mars exclusive product, so its hard to say what it compares to in the MXL line. I'd take the frequency graph that came with your V63 and compare it to the other mics on the MXL page. Chances are, you'll find a match that way. If you do, let us know what you find and how you like the mic.

I asked MXL what the difference between the V63 and V67 was, and they didn't provide much of an answer, but I asked them specifically if the main difference was the transformer-balanced output of the V67, and they gave me a "yes" - sort of.

Still, don't take that to mean that they'd sound the same. Sometimes a single transformer makes all the difference.
