I have a Peavey Vypyr amp which has a USB out. I'm trying to use the amp to record direct in to my macbook's USB port, but there is no assignable output on my tracks in Pro Tools. In other words, I can't hear my recordings or monitor while I record.

Garageband automatically assigns an input and output but I hate using garageband. Any way to make it work in Pro Tools?

You may find it depends on which version of protools you have, I think only the latest version can use various interfaces the early versions only used protools compatible interfaces, M-Audio etc. Which is why I avoided protools.

PT9, the newest release, is the only one that supports interfaces that aren't specifically sanctioned by Avid/Digidesign.

I am running PT9 actually. But I still can't assign an output.
I'm not using an audio interface either, is that essential? I just find it odd Peavey would make a USB out if you're going to need to use an interface anyway.

If I have to use both, I do this using the Pro Tools Aggregate feature right?

Don't worry about version number or hardware...you're fine.

Open finder and go to Utilities > Audio/Midi Setup.

Select the PT aggregate device.

Make sure it contains your usb amp AND whatever hardware you intend to use for listening. (built in output or whatever)

Now open protools. Make sure it's not playing and click on Setup > Playback Engine.

Select your Aggregate device and click OK.

PT will restart.

Now you'll probably have to go to Setup > IO
On the input tab AND on the output tab, click 'default'

Have a look to see what order protools has put everything in.

Your outputs should now be available to you.

It is a little odd i guess, but it's no different to a usb mic. You still need a separate interface (or built in audio) to listen back.
