Using the MR-8 as a mixer to an MP3 player

I've got an iRiver MP3 IFP-795 flash player that has a 1/8" stereo input jack and the player records line-in signals, doing "Direct Encoding" to MP3 files. So I've started using it to record to and listen back to my guitar playing being mic'ed through the MR-8. (1/4" inch stereo cable coming out of it's headphone jack going to the iRiver player's input jack). The benefits are that I get the basic sound quality of the MR-8 recorded to the iRiver but with hours of recording time. And then, there's the portability factor of the MP3 player - I fill it up with a long session of jamming, then put the thing in my pocket, go down to the living room, kick back and listen/review. Plus, I can upload these files to my computer if I happen to catch a "keeper" take, which may not sound quite as good as coming from the MR-8 via USB but the difference might be negligible.

Just something some of you guys with MP3 players that have line-in recording might wanna try out. Why not fill up the player with your own stuff and not just someone else's?

I have thought of the same thing. It is a great idea.

I was planning to buy a sony minidisc with line recording but...I got one for Christmas present and it doesn't have line or mic recording :(

What I do is transfer my music to my minidisc from my computer ( more complicated ).

MR8 > PC > MiniDisc

You'd probably get a better sound out of it if your signal went through the stereo outs, but other than that, I like your thinking...

Great way to utilize the MR8 as a musical sketchpad/notebook! :)

Out of curiosity, what bitrate does your mp3 recorder encode at?

Use the stereo outs of your MR8, not the headphone jack. The headphone amp in the MR8 is useless.

128, I'm pretty sure

I'll try that, thanks for the tip.

That's exactly what Rokket said:

I don't have an MR-8, so I wouldn't know.

MR8 and SONY MINIDISC recording

I use the MR8 and Sony Minidisc to record but use the optical out of the MR8 to the optical in of the Minidisc. No degradation in sound since its all digital. ;) I do some recordings of our group, mixed and dumped to minidisc for reviewing later. Not bad! Also, I have a soundcard with optical digital I/O which I use to transfer final mixes to the PC, again without degradation. You can do wonders with this little thing. Even with its limitations you can make it work. Can beat the price! It would be nice to have a 8 track record at one for the same price but that will take some time to arrive.

I see that Fostex is coming out with a MR8HD recorder. This one can record 4 tracks at onece instead of 2 on the MR8.

b
