If I get change my soundcard from Soundblaster Live to Audiophile 24/96, can I stilll use soundfonts? IS there a noticable different in soundcards?

I've just done this exact thing...

Except I don't know squat about soundfonts.

What I did do though is buy the 2496 and plop it into the machine without ever uninstalling the SB Live! or anything first. Installed the software for the M-Audio card, had to tweak some windows settings and mapping settings for audio programs for everything to see the new card, but now I have both cards running and functional in my machine.

Actually that may be a lie... I think I may have turned off the audio functionality of the SB Live but left MIDI running (I have a stupid midi-to-game-port cable for my keyboard, and the M-Audio wants *real* midi cables, so sadly I'm only using the SB Live! to get midi signal out of my crappy old cable). I'm not sure, but I don't think I really *had* to turn off audio, so you should be able to run both.

And yes, even in regular audio applications (not counting the rockin ASIO drivers, full-duplex capability, and routing options) the sound from the audiophile was just *better*.

Now, everyone who has made a purchase wants to defend their correctness in making it, but I mean for real, the sound is crisper, clearer, and nicer coming from the Audiophile 2496. Everything from mp3s to that stupid typing noise in ICQ - better. I, as a skeptic, was amazed.

So, long story short (too late) - yes it's better, don't know about using soundfonts but have found you can probably have the best of both worlds by having both cards in the machine. If it doesn't work at first, shift around which PCI slots the cards are in. Stupid BIOS/OS's - shouldn't make a difference (sigh) ... but it does.

I upgraded from SBLive! to AP2496 as well. (3 years ago) you'll definately notice a big improvement in sound quality.

as for soundfont, I am using Vsampler for that. Works well for what I do. :)

I used to keep an SBLive alongside my 24-bit card, but dumped it when I started using a soundfont VSTi.

I use Bismark's BS-16 but rgcaudio.com has "sfz" for free. You should also look into using one of the higher-end sampler-players that can do soundfonts AND other sampler formats like VSampler, Halion, Kontact, GigaStudio, etc.

Rgc:audio's SFZ will do u . Plus can be used as a vst plug in or standalone.
