Hey folks. I'm new to this whole recording thing. I just got my first interface (Zoom R16). It came with Cubase LE 4 but I also downloaded Reaper! It seems really cool but I have no idea what I'm doing. Are there any recent tutorials out there? Really what I want to be able to do is make drum beats and use virtual instruments. I don't have a midi controller yet. Do I need one? How can I make beats using Reaper or Cubase LE 4?

Thanks in advanced for the help! :)

Reaper tutorials? I'm midway through reading this:

It's pretty good - maybe a little advanced for what your after, but it really gets into Reaper's routing capabilities, which is quite cool.

For making drum beats... First, you'll need a virtual drum synth. After that, it's a question of opening it as a new virtual instrument on a track and then inserting a "new midi event" on that track. Double clicking on that will allow you to edit it in the piano roll.

Try Youtube - there's probably a tutorial out there on programming drums in reaper.

You'll need both a midi controller and a midi interface. The Zoom doesn't handle midi. Fortunately, midi interfaces are cheap as dirt.
Yes, Reaper hosts VST instruments, so you'll have no problem with that. Also, when you set your ZOOM up with Reaper, install the latest ZOOM drivers first. It'll make the set up go much smoother. When you've done that, select ASIO in the options, and you'll be good to go. If you want to use the controller functionality of the ZOOM, it uses the Mackie Control Universal setting.

btw, when you download Reaper, it comes with an html link to a great manual.

Good luck!

Ahhh The link is broke or something. It tries to open a pdf file but fails. I've got the newest version of Adobe Reader. I guess I'll try again later.

Here's the link.

When I click the free download link it doesn't work. Can you open it?? Maybe it's me :/
