my preamp has a compressor and parametric eq on it

should i use it and record my vocals and use another eq plug in and compressor when i mix?

I'm lost on what to do, plz help me find my way :)

THANK YOU!!

Record the vocals dry and unless you need the compression to control the volume don't use that either. You can always EQ and compress later during processing.

It depends on what you like to do. I love adding compression and EQ while recording. It "locks in" the sound, guides the production down a defined path, and gives me a better idea of what is needed when overdubbing future tracks.

Some people don't like to do it because they want all of the options they can possibly have later down the line.

My brain doesn't work well dealing with dozens of possible options at mix time.
Other people's brains don't work well dealing with making commitments to final sounds before mixing starts.
Do what works best.

I usually record with a little compression depending what preamp I am using.
Just make sure you use a safe ratio like 2:1 until you know voice really well. You don't want lose a take because the compressor kicked in hard and your aggressive parts sound like whispers.

What is the pre that you have?

hi everyone thank you for your responses, much appreciated!

What is the pre that you have?

i had presonus tube channel which i didnt like that much and then i super upgraded to a UAD 710 TWIN-FINITY and all my mics sounds more pro and sensitive, especially the at4040 mic I use

I think with the UAD that you'd be nuts not to use it to full effect. Spend a couple of nights practicing with it a bit and learn which settings wind up working with various mix styles so you won't recording with settings that won't work too well, and you should be well on your way to good sound. Combined with an AT 40-series mic, you should get excellent results that don't require any plugs.

He has a great point. You need to use the pre amp to its fullest. I said earlier I use compression depending on the preamp. Well the preamp I use it on is the La-610. O.P. use the preamp to shape your sound. It will sound better than the standard plugins on any daw if you use it right.

i really like my new preamp, but with my at4040 mic, it increased the bass frequency in my voice, and it sounds distorted but its not, its just my voice, and i didnt have this problem when i was using my mic with the mbox3, now im thinking if i should buy another mic
