Hey,
I got a 788 a couple of months back, but have had trouble figuring out how to use outboard equip with my 788. I've borrowed a couple of outboard effects units from a friend, but have no real idea how to connect them up and use them. I am presuming I use the Aux send and return to connect it up, but the manual mentions using the monitor sends or something. This really confused me. I've spent most of this afternoon trying to work out how. And when I connect them, how do I connect more than one at once? And then how do I assign it to a track or tracks?

Any help will be greatfully recieved. I'm only 15, and have had no experience in this type of stuff before.

Thanks,
James

Outboard effexts

Try this.... a line from the aux out into Fx in .... Fx out back to aux in ...(effects must be inline, ie one plugged into the other then back into the 788)
If you plug your gtr into ch 1, push SEND and turn up the Aux out to 65 for a start.
Assign the Aux Inputs to another ch, say ch 2.
Push up the faders on both chs, you should hear a clean sound on ch 1 and the effected sound on ch 2
You could now record both chs at the same time, or just the clean ch but still hear the effects you want... good for doing vocals.
You can also bounce a clean track and put some effect onto A great way to record vocals with different amounts of reverb or gtrs and change the amount of distortion etc...
Hope this helps... Zeek

Hey,
Thanks for that.
I'll go and try it in a min then go and post back on if it worked or not.
Thanks Again,
James

Hey,
I tried what you sugested last night - and no luck :-( The clean signal was working fine, but the signal running through my effects unit was jst sending a lot of feedback into the recorder.
Anyone any more sugestions?
Thanks.
James

Try running your Fx out back into a new ch instead of the Aux in... works ok as well.... Not sure of reason for feed back, have had similar probs myself when I was trying to work out the outbord stuff... will have a think for you
Good luck... I know the frustration!!!

It's all about the routing. This is a massive omission from the manual. I would never have worked this out without printing out the info as described by members at the now defunct Tascam forum. I don't have it to hand, but I will dig it out and get back to you.

It works fine using the aux sends and returns, BTW. You have to route your channels to the aux send and then route everything to the stereo outs (I think) before you can hear anything. Can't remember the exact sequence, sorry. But I'll dig out the info.

Hi,

I run in series. That is, I plug my guitar into my effects (chain) and then out of the chain and in to the 788. Typically, I use the 788's inputs A & B and then assign them to whatever channel/track I need.

This is my chain: Guitar -> Mackie 1202 -> Digitech GSP21PRO -> BBE -> 788.
or...

Guitar -> Digitech RP300 -> Mackie -> Digitech GSP21PRO(Bypassed) -> BBE -> 788.

I also have a synth/drum machine plugged into my Mackie, so while going into the 788's inputs and can put the bass on track 3, drums on tracks 5/6 etc.

I don't like using the Aux in's cuz they don't go loud enough and they seem sterile compared to inputs A - D's preamps.

This is the routing I use when using outboard effects with the 788:

Outboard Out to 788 Aux. In. Select the track you want to add effects to. Press Send to bring up the Effects Send screen. Turn "aux" lvl knob on screen to 30 (or whatever setting you want). This gets the signal into the machine.

788 Aux. Out to Outboard In.

Now you have to route it through the machine. Press "aux inputs" button and while holding it down press "submix". Release the buttons. This brings up the submixer screen. Highlight the aux channel and turn the volume up to 30 (or whatever). Press the "submix" button, and while holding it down, press the "stereo" button. That will send the submixer's signal out of the stereo outputs. Play the track and adjust levels on the outboard and on the screen. You should be able to hear your effects.

You can use one outboard unit in stereo or two in mono.
