Hi guys, is it ok to record vocal without processing to daw then play it back, run the output to my hardware eq comp then back to daw? Or is it usually hardware eq comp on the first place before it goes in my daw.?

It's fine to do it the first way. You don't want to process on the way in unless you know exactly what processing you want to put on it/how you want it to sound.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing except you're adding a D/A and an A/D conversion which on paper should be avoided but if it sounds ok it's fine. Some would say it's better because you haven't locked in the compression when you record.

In the days of tape, most people used a compressor after the mic pre to avoid "overs". I still do because I like the sound even though it's not as much of a concern with the increased head room of digital.

So how they usually hook up and use hardware eq comp this digital age? I never use hardware processor but mostly software so I'm kind of a noob by this. Planning to switch to mostly hardware coz they said hardware processing has better quality.
