Hi all,

I am new to these forums.

Have recently got back into a bit of "DIY" MIDI since a long break, when I used to use an Atari and JV30!!

Anyway, I have recently purchased an Roland JV880, rack mount version of the JV80, I believe. Have purchased some MIDI files and the patch sounds are not matched to my module, and upon investigation it turns out that this module does not support GS/GM
Does anybody have experience of the best way to modify these files so that they sound correct when played with my module? In particular the bass track appears to be the wrong octave and the rhythm section is playing patch 35 for the kick, but the module has a Bright kick at patch 36, so I can tarnspose this section ok.

Was wondering if I shoud try and set up a configuration in Cakewalk that maps the GM codes to my module, just not 100% sure how to do that!

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards

Andy

You probably know this already, but just in case...

The key to getting the proper sounds mapped to midi files, Cakewalk, etc. are midi program change commands. Lacking GS/GM capability means you just need to put a little more setup work into getting the right sounds in the right places. Once you transpose the bass and get the kick playing the sound you like, save it to disk under a different name that will distinguish it from the original unaltered file.

A 'configuration' in Cakewalk would involve program change mapping but you'd still need to do things like transposing the bass by hand. Depending on how many midi files are involved and how uniform they are in their inconsistency with the JV it might be worthwhile to set something like this up - otherwise it would probably be more trouble than it's worth.

Hi,

Many thanks for you help, really appreciate.

Sounds like I need to somehow set up some form of configuration in Cakewalk to map to my sound module. Have you any experience of doing this?

Thanks again

Andy

If the JV880 has a midi patch map function you will be able to make the corrections inside the synth itself. If not just open the files in Cakewalk, make the necessary corrections and save them back to disk under a different name.
