using gate to trigger sounds

i'd like to use a gate, triggered by the kick drum, on a sine wave, to get more low end keeping the feel of the real bass drum.
i know hardware gates can do this, but is there any way to do it software?
any plug in, any editor...

did i make myself unclear, or is it that nothing like that exists? there MUST be a way!!

I think the Expander/Gate in 'ProTools Free' should be able to do it, it has a side chain that can be fed from another wav file I believe.

that's exactly what i meant.
i've tried, actually, with pro tools LE but it doesn't work on my computer (amd k6 processor and sblive card....).
i need to change this damn computer..
