When I arm a track, I can play my guitar and hear it back through my speakers. This works great. But is there a way for my to use effects so that they play back then as well. I know how to use them for playback but what about real time.

Do you mean you want to use input monitoring ?

Options --> Audio --> Input Monitoring
Highlight your wave device.

Or just simply record your guitar clean, and apply the effect to the audio track recorded. SONAR 2 XL came with ReValver SE DXi effect which is great for guitar FX plugins...

CAUTION!

Input Monitoring is useless with latency higher than 10 ms!

Yo, dmbpettit if your soundcard support ASIO, then you can live happy with very low latency. What's your soundcard ? Have you updated your SONAR 2.0 XL to 2.2 XL ?

I use my Audigy 2 Platinum. And I have not done the upgrade to 2.2 yet.

...Then upgrade it. Go www.Cakewalk.com to download the update patch files. You'll need to update to 2.1 first, then to 2.2 in order to work. By updating to 2.2, SONAR will take a benefit of using ASIO compatible soundcards (Audigy 2 does just use the latest driver from Creative's site...). Low latency should your card be... And if you decide to use Input Monitoring, I would mute the "Line In" (on "playback" of the Windows Mixer not as a recording device, that is), or you will hear your guitar twice. ;)
