The Way It Moves
Have you guys ever experienced this? I thought I saw someone on this forum who did this and it turned out pretty good. I was wondering if this would be an advisable alternative to buying expensive Auralex foam? And if this would at least be an improvement rather than making it sound worse?

Thanks everyone,
~Jared

I really doubt that cubicle dividers would have much of an impact on anything outside of low volume sources

Using cubicle divders for SOUNDPROOFING?

Hmmmmm, I smell another STICKY, DRAGON:rolleyes:

Jared, had the owner of this bbs listened to our pleas for the last 5 years, you wouldn't be confused. Yes, I said confused.

And LISTEN UP DRAGON!!! I'm going to say this for the THOUSANTH FUCKING TIME AND THE LAST TIME!!!!:rolleyes:

Jared, you are confusing SOUNDPROOFING, and ACOUSTICAL TREATMENT.

Some office cubical panels WILL offer a modicum of ABSORPTION as well as acting as GOBOS, when used to HELP isolate a set of mics or single mic from others.

Auralux is a foam product designed as an ABSORPTION remedy.(treatment.

However, NEITHER of these items will do diddly squat for SOUNDPROOFING.

To demonstrate this statement, wrap a piece of Auralux foam around your head and turn on a radio. Or set up some of these panels in a room, and place a radio on the other side of the panels and LISTEN. I rest my case.

A simple search for "auralex" or "cubicle divider" or "soundproof" would have answered all your questions admirably.

If somebody won't search for the information that is already here in spades, I don't know how a sticky is going to help. It's just going to get ignored.

Maybe we should change the title of the forum to "Soundproofing is hard and expensive while Acoustic Treatment is merely expensive" or something along those lines.

Or perhaps " Please use the goddamn search function". I like that one better.

Ok, I have access to some of these office cubcle partitions. I was thinking about using them for a bit of isolation for around my drum kit. My studio is in one room and I'd like to just try to keep more of the bleed into the mics. Actually the overheads I'm using seem to be pretty good but the kick mic and snare mic seem to be the worst. I was thinking about using some 4' high partitions. Worth it or not? I could get enough piesces to enclose the kit off from the room. I'm thinking it's worth a try.

You're not going to isolate squat with those. They might be useful for gobos, though.

I like "Acoustic treatment is really hard and expensive, and isolation is worse"

or

"Isolation - If you have to ask, you're doing it wrong. Period."

or

"Isolation - you're fucked junior"

or

"Isolation and Acoustics - Webster's should be your first stop"

:D :D :D :D :D

The search funtion is there - use it.
When you are already confused, searching for "auralux" won't tell you diddly when it comes to soundproofing, and when you THINK auralux/office dividers=soundproofing...I submit you will have to search all day. But, to each his own opinion.

rick while i agree with you whole heartedly .... please slow down brother... i was pleased to see your return and would hate to see you go again...

Well I'm sorry I used the word "soundproofing" instead of "acoustical treatment", I guess, I didn't know it would tug at your guys' heart strings because quite frankly I couldn't care less what I call it.

And I'm sorry I asked this question. I figured in a world of maybe a few semi-professionals I could at least get an answer that was somewhat professional in nature instead of rude responses telling me to "use the goddamn search button". You know a lot of you guys are like teachers to the rest of this community. Teachers in a classroom get asked the same question over, and over, and over throughout their career. And I'm sorry that I'm the third guy that asked you this question in the past however long this community has been here.

Thanks, though, for all of your insightful information the few of you here in the community have provided me with.

Jared -

Rick answered your question. Most of the posts that followed (mine included) were in response to his post about stickies. This owner of this BBS has done next to nothing for it since I have been a member. At least if there were a few stickies at the top of this forum some of the more frequently asked questions wouldn't have to be asked so frequently. John Sayers forum works like that, and I had 99% of my questions answered by the stickies.

Sorry your thread got sidetracked, but I don't think anyone was attacking you personally.

This section of the BBS is probably the most complicated, but will reap the most benefit to anyone's studio.

dont take it to heart... you didnt know you were stepping into a meat grinder... the stickies thing has been a bone of contention for sometime now... perhaps we need a stickie on it???

There is nothing to be sorry for. Nobody chastised you. On the contrary, I used your thread to illustrate to this forums community the absurdity of Dragons refusal to use this forum as a REAL tool for enlightenment. Let me put it this way.

I have seen many many instances of FOAM companys outragous claims that their products are SOUNDPROOFING products. I can't count the number of times the members here have had to clarify to unsuspecting customers of these lieing bastards, after posting questions here regarding the use of these products to SOUNDPROOF....ie....your thread.

In that regard, maybe you will understand the point of my post now.

I didn't know it would tug at your guys' heart strings because quite frankly I couldn't care less what I call it.
You would if you spent $400 or more on products that proved to do NOtHIING for the intended purpose should that purpose have actually been to SOUNDPROOF. And that my friend.........IS THE POINT:rolleyes: To enlighten people....but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....IT WOULD APPEAR, that Dragon would rather have more "hits" for advertizing purposes by having NO STICKYS. Thereby requiring members as well as other inquiring newbies to post questions and answers.....HENCE MORE HITS.

Anyway, good luck with your treatment/gobo project. At least you know the difference now, REGARDLESS if you care less. Maybe someone else will benifit from the info.
