Is it possible? Is everyone who uses Cooledit using only the digital effects onboard or online? Does anyone know how to send a signal out to rack based processor and back to a recording track without creating a feedback loop? How can one mix and or master using analog effects?

first reply was based on Audition which permits bus creation . . . but you still have to have an audio card that permits multiple, independent outputs

but essentially there is nothing different about this with CE then anything in analog realm

you have to have a 'send' that's independent from the master bus

if you are moving from digital to analog the send has to be a D/A you then need an independent return to a physical A/D on your audio cards to bring the sound back in

no matter what version of CEP/AA you have to have the physical channels to do this each individual send (though you can group multiple tracks to use the same send to the same outboard gear) has to have an individual D/A then to bring them back each individual return has to have a discrete A/D

same as it ever was

Still struggling...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure this is a whole lot simpler than I am making it out to be.
I am using CEP2. I have two independent digital sound cards with a total of 6 ins and 4 outs - stereo. I also have a rack full of analog effects and processors. I am very pleased with the sounds I am getting but....
I want to:
  1. Send a recorded track out to the rack.
  2. Monitor it and A/B it against the effected track while simultainously monitoring how it sets in the rest of the mix.
  3. Record the approved effected track to a new track.

Is this possible? Every patch config I have come up with results in either a feedback loop or inability to monitor the track.
Please help...I swear I'm ready to go back to tape!

I don't know of any way to monitor a track in that way. It wasn't until Adobe came out with Audition 2.0 that implemented the ASIO drivers that a track could be monitored during recording -- from the track, that is.

In other words, you'll actually have to purchase software to do what you want to do. Otherwise, you'll have to do what we all did back in the era when CEP 2.0 was current: record a track and duplicate it, treat the dupe, and then compare the two, or treat the original track in Edit View and undo and treat with something else if you don't like it.

I work this way all the time but use 24 channels of PCI interfaces (3 each with 8 independent outs) to do it. Each out is wired to my console via a normalled bay. I pick off the desired output from the bay, send to the effect(s), send it back to the software via one of the interface inputs, and record it. Because I mix through the console, I will often just use the treated track during mix-down and not bother to record it onto the CEP/Audition session. This is all done from CEP/Audition multitrack mode.
