using console again

ok, I use sonar 5P and have been mixing in the box for a while. I would kind of like to send my 'puter outs back to the console to use the consoles eq's. Now, here is the thing. I would have to run 3 lightpipes out from my motu2408mkIII into sometype of interface as my console is analog. I am concerned about too much back and forth from analog to digital. My setup is as follows. Record directly into preamps(external) and only use console to monitor. I9 go into an Alesis HD24 then transfer tracks into Sonar 5P. so the issue is getting to come back through the console via individual tracks, ie. 24 seperate tracks if that is what was recorded. Maybe use a Motu 828?

If you have a 2408 and an HD24, you have all you need. And as far as too much back and forth AD/DA, I never worry about it. For me that was the whole reason for using a console was to get closer to a "tape" owrld approach and still be able to edit digitally. I find NO degradation that I don't want.
 
see, what IO'd really want to have is 24 seperate tracks from the motu going into my console so I can utilize the eq's and have a more hands on feel when mixing.I realise this will bot enable me save mixes as before as any console settings will be lost with each project. Uh... maybe I just need to get an SSL :)

This is a valid concern. Each conversion degrades the original signal. If you want a physical mixer, why not look at one of the DAW controllers? This will not degrade the source. I sold my Mackie 8 buss some time ago but still have a 1642 gathering dust. I've been looking very seriously at the Mackie control unit.

*** I just realized that you want to use the EQ in your board. A DAW Controller won't work for that. Out of curiosity, why do you prefer the board EQ? The EQ available in Sonar 5PE is far more versatile from my perspective.

A good question! I dont really know, I do used the eq's in sonar a lot, I do like the cambridge EQ. I think I would like the hands on feel again from when I only used the console. Thinking about it , being limited to 36 tracks may be a problem as some projects get up to 50-55 tracks a times.My console is a 36 input,24 monitor.I presently only used the board for monitoring when tracking,then return the master out of my Motu2408mkIII to the consoles mains.Seems like just a big voloum knob!

I actually have the mackie control universal (with 2 extenders and a C4 unit as well) I have to say I LOVE IT! I hated the dayum mouse and now that I rarely have to use it I am much more at home when mixing. The MCU actually helps me in every aspect of the recording, which I didn't expect. It is alot easier to arm tracks, hit record-stop-undo-start over, and everything else. I am truly spoiled now with the MCU lol. I have a mackie 32x8 that I use for additional pre-amps goin in, but I would never want to go back through it for mixing, the MCU has WAY more features. It is motorized, and has every quick access button you could ever need. I also loved the fact it came with the lexar overlays for whichever program you run. Also it is not much more than getting an additional break-out box to send channels back to your board. They are only like $999 from most anywhere. I have 2 of the extenders so I can actually have 24 faders in front of me, but the bank-up/bank-down buttons are alot less hassle then I thought they would be. Because the mackie control has the track names at the top of each channel you can see very quickly where your at. I would recommend it for you, I think you would have alot more fun and solve alot more problems/issues with that than you would bye going back to the board. Not to mention all the little problems that will most likely arise from adding another break-out box to your computer/set-up. Hope this helps!
 
Thanks Hollowdan! Yesm thats an idea I'll look into. My board is ok, its a 15 year old AMR by Peavey 36 in ,24 monitor. I bought it from John Kay of Steppenwolf 5 years ago or so. The eq. is good for somethings, I dont ever use the micpres but people report they are pretty decent ( lets not get going of the hype thing again :p ) Fir me I like it because of it 36 input and the 24 monitoring is usefull also. I'd kind of hate to give it up if only becuase it is fair "eye candy" for people to see when waling into the studio, dumb as that may be.
