Using ART Tube MP as a direct box

I just bought an ART Tube MP to use with a new mic and now I'm thinking about an inexpensive bass as my next purchase. Has anyone tried using the Tube MP as a direct box for recording bass? I know they advertise it that way but I was wondering what kind of results people have gotten. And how about another twist on this question. Has anyone tried putting their guitar into a multi-effects pedal, then a Tube MP, then into a 4-track? I haven't gotten around to trying this yet.

Yo O Dave:

I have an ART preamp in my studio but I do not have the tube amp; I bought mine back a bit before the tube came out. You can run vocals through it, as well as anything your synth can dish up. I have even run my drum machine through the box just to see if it warms up - - and it does!

I only use guitar patches through my synth and always add FX during the rehearse mix-down. Then, I might make four or more cuts and play around with FX. And, then, Voila, another 5 hours have passed and it is time for a martini and relaxation. Great life.

Keep asking and keep experimenting.

PS A couple of years ago I flew to Jersey and went for a ride on my brother's US navy Ship - it was great gliding by the Statue of Liberty. My brother was the skipper so I had his cabin and great access. Cheers,GH

You can use your ART pre amp as a direct box to tape, but it will not provide enough gain usually if you just plug the bass into the 1/4" input. But, if you plug the bass into a regular DI box, then run it to the ART, I think that you will be very impressed with the results. I recommend the Countryman DI box, or any other DI box that has a high quality transformer, preferable a Jensen transformer.

Plug the bass into the DI box, take the DI box XLR out to the XLR in on the ART, then the balanced out of the ART directly to tape. Short signal path, great sound.

Good luck.

Hey Ed,
It sounds like you are familiar with the ARt tube preamps. Should I get the two channel version or the ART tube MP ($99.00 version?) Thanks

Sincerely;
Dom Franco

Hey, I figure you can never have enough pre amps. Are you ever going to be doing stereo micing? Will you ever be recording two things at once? If so, you should get the two channel unit. Plus, it has a power on off button. Plus, it has a regular power cord as opposed to a wall wart.

Go for the two channel unit my man.

The tube mp is $99, but the sterio version is $279. That sucks. Anyone find it cheaper?
Also , Behringer makes a stereo tube mic pre for $200. How is that compared to the ART?

Yo guys:

If you have the money, give a look and a listen (if you can) to the Martinsound mic-max. They also make another mic pre that is even more expensive. Martinsound might be near the top of high end stuff but for those with money to burn, why not go for the best?

PS My ART pream cost me more than 279; my unit has plenty of power with its input and output knobs and it has phantom power built in.

Panny,

I also thought about the Behringer preamp after seeing it in a catalog, but a) I've seen a lot more negative opinions about Behringer than positives, and b) everyone here on Homerecording.com raves about the Tube MP, especially for the price. So I decided to go with the Tube MP and I think it was a good decision.

I kind of wanted more than one preamp and considered a small mixer as a way to get them, but finally decided that all I need for now is a preamp with phantom power for the new mic (an AT 4033, the sound is a big step up from what I was getting from my SM57 and SM58). If I finally end up with a bass then I'll probably get the Dual MP so I have the extra preamps, but for now I'm happy.

The MP is a great unit. Had mine for 4 years.
Also have the Vactrol Compressor from ART.
Lately though I have found stuff around 750US, out there. One that I am excited about.
I have mentioned it before in this forum, but thaven't got any real respnse.
