Using a Tape Deck for an echobox?

Can you take a R.A.W. tape deck (the one with three heads AKA repro), and stick it in the effects loop of your guitar amp to use as a simple echo? Or would only the "echo" go through? Meaning I would have to mix a dry guitar signal and the deck signal to achieve the desired effect?

Basically would the "intial guitar playing" AND the "echo" make it through the tape deck if I just plugged a guitar straight in (or ran it through the effects loop)?

Thanks!!!

got a link to a picture of one of these tape decks?

If your effect's loop has a way to mix the effects with the dry signal, then it would work. Most likely it will not work though. The output of the tape deck will only be the delayed signal. Which amp are you using?

This is exactly my thoughts. Unfortunatley I do not have have a mix knob on my effects loop. I have a Laney VC30. I guess the other option would be to use a small mixer. Unfortunately I do not have one.

It would be a pain to bring a reel to reel deck live to each show. Also, you'd want one with pitch control to change the speed of the echo. It would only have a single echo, provided you're monitoring from the playback (and not the record) head.

I guess you could splice together a tape loop if you didn't want to have to worry about rewinding the tape.

I've thought about doing this in the studio, instead of buying an actual tape delay unit, but haven't done it yet.
