Hi

I am thinking of stepping out of my bedroom, for which i use a good PC running Cubase with an Edirol audio interface, to a high level setup using a mixing desk and a proper live room etc. What i would like to know is how does one integrate a mixer into that setup? I would like to keep using Cubase if possible, without switching to,say, an ADAT machine, but i would also like to have the advantages of a mixing desk. Basically, i don't really know what i need/want. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The edirol has two inputs, right?

You can decide one is buss 1, and the other buss 2, recording on either (or both if you want stereo) as you wish.

Plug buss 1 or buss 2 (or stereo L/R) outputs to the inputs on the edirol, and happy recording.

Cubase already has a built-in mixier so buying an outboard mixer buys you nothing except maybe some additional input preamps. In fact, I'll argue that using an external mixer with DAW software is a big step backwards because you've then lost the wonderful feature of software recall and automation. You might benefit from this article I wrote for EQ magazine:

okay thanks. So how about if i use a mixer just for its inputs but actually use the software mixer for the mixing? My two input edirol wont allow me to do much simultaneous recording obviously. Is this a better approach?
