I tried this over the weekend and it works pretty good.
Used FLStudio as my effects box.
Behringer mx mixer.
Cool Edit as my source.
* Recorded a track in cool edit.
* patched the output to a channel on my mixer with an insert.
* used an insert cable to connect to my 1010 channel 8 I/O
* told FLStudio (in effects mixer) to use Channel 8 in as source and 8 out as output.
* used any effect I wanted and it worked great !!!
