Using a 4 track as a looper live and at home

I have heard on these boards that a 4 track recorder can be used as a sample looper (like a Boss loop-station or Line6 DL-4) to create loops 'on the fly' and play along with them, live or in my room. is this true? and if so, how is it done?

perhaps something to do with a "punch in/out" function? anyone? anyone?
 
The only way I could see that happening is if it had a long built in delay. You can use a (again, long) delay for this instead of a 4 track and probably have better results. You'd have to have a programmed preset for the loop timing for each song/tempo you're working with onstage, but it's not too difficult. Just set the feedback to infinite, and you're looping.
