Using 2 pc's for recording.

I own a desktop and a lap top both have 384 ram and fast processors (I cant remember the speed off the top of my head). Currently I record out of the desktop through an audiophile 2496 card. What Im wondering is can anyone suggest to me an efficient method of using both for recording in the same studio. Not so sure myself of what it could possibly be...
 
If you use the same software and the same model interface, (PCI for desktop and Firewire or USB for laptop) you can put the desktop at home and use the laptop of mobile recordings. Take the laptop to any place you want and finally come home transfer the file into your desktop.
Other possibility is use one for recording and one for mastering. You can set two different rooms and run these systems in there. I can't think of anything else, sorry!
