I ended up picking up one of these units last night and haven't had a real chance to use it yet - but I've read that it has more uses then just a Mic preamp. Anyone have any suggestions?
I use it for recording bass as a direct box as well as for recording vocals and acoustic guitar - it gives a subtle, warmer sound into my Fostex DMT-8 hard disk recorder.
I have the ART pre-amp; I don't think I have the tube model but I use that box for running any patch from my synthesizer: horns, strings, keys, effects, etc. You can use the pre for about anything and everything. As noted, it does give you a nice rich warm sound for most things but, of course, is great for vocals.
I have the dual tube MP (same thing, basically, just two of them). You can basically use it for anything where you might want to add a little gain --- pre-amp before a guitar or bass amplifier, direct box for recording, etc. The quality of the gain is superior to most mixers or effects, so I recommend using it all the time on just about everything!
Yes,over a 2 week period I compared the following: Event EMP-1,ART Dual MP,ART Tube PAC,DBX 386,Mackie 1402VLZ.My take was that the Event was a very, very good, clean pre that worked well with both vox and guitars, but in my situation I decided not to keep it because although superior to the Mackie's pres,it had a similar grain of sound,i.e. hyper clean, and I wanted something a little more on the character end of the spectrum.I kept the Tube PAC...
Another use is for clean, direct electric guitar recording with POD.
If you have a POD or some other guitar amp emulator try recording tracks by using only a monitored "amp" sound and send a clean, direct electric guitar tone to tape/disk going through the Art or a Countryman D.I. before the mixer input. Afterwards you can drive the input of the amp emulator with the track and adjust the tone and effects until it's perfect for the final mix. Also, you can copy the track and layer many amp tone combinations together for a multi-amp sound.
Depending on your setup it can be a patching nightmare but I've been amazed how a good guitar performance can be enhanced, after the fact.
I still have a solid state amp and I use the ART in between my effects pedal and the input
on the amp. I lower the input gain on the amp, use the the input gain on the ART to get the tube sound I want, and use the output gain on the ART to get the level I want. It's obviously not the same as a good amp, but for my recording budget it gives me a noticeable improvement over the sound of the amp by itself.
I also run my drum machine through my ARTs. If I remember correctly, it was Green Hornet who first suggested that to me a while ago.

I have the Event EMP-1.Its not too bad.Havent had a chance to compare it to the ART MP.I just purchased an ART tube channel though and,in my opinion, the Event doesnt stand up to it at all!
Hey Buck, have you tried using one as a cooking skillet? Make sure you plug it in though as the tubes help warm your food faster and give it a "glow"...
I like the MP for a 4 track analog unit, James... but for digital recording, it's a little too noisey. And, I guess it would make a better hotplate than pot-holder, huh?
I'm just curious, Ed...
Do you think the MP gets hot enough to make toast?
Or, better yet.... toasted cheese sandwiches?
