Between being and nothing
Hey all,
I'm currently doing stuff off of a Compaq Armada M300 laptop. It recently had it's hard drive replaced, with probably one with the same speed as the previous (4200 RPM), but with what seems like a faster seek time, so it's turning out to be a faster drive. and I upgraded the OS to WIN2000. It is also a Pentium III 500 Mhz, with 320 MB of Ram.
I currently have an Aardvark Direct Mix USB3 soundcard. After tweeking this thing to death in Win 98, this runs like a dream in Win2000, however...
While I'm able to record in 24-bit, I can only output in 16-bit. Also, the window mixer won't recognize the card. Everytime I try to open volume control, I get an error message like the following:
"There is something wrong with your hardware. You may install mixers/devices using Add/Remove Hardware in the Control Panel".
Uh...excuse me?
Anyway, I've emailed Aardvark about this, since I'm thinking this may be a driver issue. I went to their website to look for drivers, and while they have pre-release drivers for their other products, I couldn't find one for the USB 3.
I've emailed their tech support people regarding this issue. I'm giving them two days to get back to me on this. If I don't hear from them, I'm giving this up and getting another one.
I'm tempted to splurge and get a Digigram VX PC Sound card. I also like the look of RME's card, but I don't want to pay the thousand bucks for a breakout box. M-Audio also has a couple of soundcard options, but I'm not sure they would work on my system. Tascam's US-224 just got released today, so that looks promising.
Anyway, has anyone had any experience with these cards, or others? Could anyone tell me what they are and what you would recommend?
Appreciate all help given. Thanks.
