hey folks,

was just given a great laptop for work, a toshiba p3, 1ghz, 256mb ram, 30gig hd, cdr/dvd. i'd love to use it for audio. at the very least to mix remotely at the most multitrack with it. i'm aware of the tascam usb, the motu firewire, and the delta usb audio interfaces. anyone have any real world experiences with any of these? any help or advice appreciated!

thanks!

tony

firewire seems to be the way to go for notebooks......is yours going to be configured for audio?

Go the Firewire route. It has an higher transfer rate.

I'd definitely go for firewire.

I think within a couple of years you only can get FireWire and SCSI and that USB and MIDI will be dead.

cheers.

scsi and usb will be dead........but i'm not so sure about midi.

usb or firewire?

i'll need to use the laptop for work as well. is there a way to configure it for audio but still be usable for the typical spreadsheet, databases and some graphics work? maybe seperate boots? i'm new to the computer audio, but have doing the analog thing for years. if it matters, windows me is on the system now. tho' i could use anything, even nt.

so has anyone used the motu firewire? any other firewire options out there?

thanks!

tony

If it's between firewire and USB, go the firewire route. SCSI is not dead, nor will it die for serious high end digital work. Many people think it's scsi sucks since there is a learning curve and expense. An Adaptec Ultra 160 (320 card out soon) moves data more accurately with less frame / byte loss over firewire. Firewire is a consumer target.

whatever the future of SCSI may be, i don't think i'd go with SCSI unless i had a definite need for it....it seems to me that you can get a lot of recording done without SCSI devices.

if you are free to configure the notebook however you wish, i'd think it would be great for audio......a friend of mine has been using a usb interface with a PIII 1Ghz notebook...he plans on getting the motu 828 ...........i wonder if there are any reviews (maybe i'll look for some)....i'm also curious about other options.

hey j

hey j,

do you know how your friends laptop is setup? which usb interfac is he using? i'm free to set up the laptop as i wish as long as i can use ms access, excel and corel draw.

thanks!

hey Tony,

i'm pretty sure my friend has the Ego Sys U2A....his notebook came with Windows ME and that's what he's running...i think he set it up mainly for audio and to watch DVDs...he bought the notebook and i don't think he uses it for work at all.

the hammerfall is pcmcia isn't it? i wonder how this compares to firewire..

J -- I wrote a few posts on the DSP -- you can do a search. I had ordered it, then canceled when it was delayed. Will likely order it again in October. I really liked the specs, and drivers. the specs are faster than firewire -- it uses firewire between the breakout and pcmcia card, but the card has a faster transfer rate.

J -- I use sonar as well and inquired about this. they do seem to have wdm support and drivers for most of their products -- as of 1 month ago, they did not have it for the DSP, though they now have posted a Win2000 driver on their site. also, they mentioned that thier mme drivers are faster than many other developers wdm drivers. I was skeptical and wrote cakewalk and they confirmed this. others on this board have also confirmed their driver quality. they seem to be fairly driver centric.

well, it's good to hear that they have good driver support. thanks adam.
