The Devil Has Blue Eyes
Hi All,

I purchased the Yamaha MW10C USB mixer. When I record anything thru the "line ins" of the mixer, I can only hear the sound thru my monitors...Whether it be vocals, acoustic guitar, etc. I hear all the music I've already recorded thru my headphones except for the sound I am trying to record at that moment.

I have my monitors plugged into the stereo out on the board and my headphones plugged into the phones/monitor out on the board. In theory, by hooking it up this way, I should be able to hear everything from my phones OR from my monitors when pressing the button that toggles whether I will use the stereo out or the monitor out. Having said that, it works fine with all pre-recorded music...I have no trouble toggling back and forth the pre-recorded tracks. However, whatever instrument I'm trying to record at the moment only comes thru the monitors regardless as to which selection I've chosen on the board (stereo out or phones).

I do not think the rest of my setup has anything to do with this but just in case, here is what I am using...

-Of course the Yamaha MW10C
-Sonar X1
-Yamaha HS50 monitors
-MXL 4000 condenser plugged directly into the XLR on the board
-M-Audio Axiom 49 hooked in via USB as my midi controller
-2.8Ghz PC with 3GB RAM

Any ideas? I am desperately trying to finish the vocals on this project but am completely stuck on this one.

Thanks,

ROK

Monitors and phones are supposed to be on the same channel? The monitor volume control (beside the mains volume) affects headphone volume.
You should be able to hear the signal throught the headphones or it is broken (with or without plugging it into the computer).

Thanks for the response. But I don't understand why I can hear everything else thru my headphones with the exception of whatever I'm tracking at that given moment. Basically the headphones and the jack are working, the monitors are working and the mic is working because I can hear it thru the monitors and see it registering in my daw.

Engage Input Echo in Sonar on the track you are recording.

You may have slight latency on the track you are recording.

The workaround is to mult the incoming signal and feed it into another channel on the mixer.

There should be a "thru" of some sort in the software for the Yamaha. Check out the virtual console for the Yammy.

Ok, I am figuring out how to do those things at the moment. In the meantime, I plugged my monitors into the "phones/monitor" out and I have the same problem as my headphones...I can't hear my voice when I "check" into the mic but my daw picks it up just fine.

BTW thanks for the help

I don't have that mixer nor had any experience with a USB mixer but from my days at school doing Music Technology I remember the mixers having a button that allowed the headphones to be used, some had a 'volume' which was like a monitor mix which controlled the amount of playback coming back to the headphones/monitors might be worth (if your mixer has any of these) checking that out and if not maybe posting on a Yahama forum.
