Hi all - Great site! Please help - Trying to decide between upgrading crappy soundcard (SB Live! 16 bit), or getting a USB interface like MBOX or USB Pre 1.5, to record solo stuff to Cakewalk etc. If MBOX is 24/96, will the computer "downgrade" the recorded sound to 16 bit? (i.e, what sound driver does the computer USB use?)

If you want it "dithered" down to 16 bit, you will need to conver it to 16 bit ( in order for you to hear it on your CD's etc....).

I myself would not purchase a USB soundcard interface (If you want to go the external route, I would suggest a FIREWIRE connection, as opposed to a USB connection).

The reason that I wouldn't suggest USB is because of the data transfer rate.

I will try to find some reading info for you. :)

Peace....

Post Script: I am not trying to say to you that you shouldn't get it. I am just saying that at this point in my needs for production. I wouldn't.... ;)

You will probably be better off upgrading your soundcard.

How many INs/OUTs do you need?

Thanks Spin - I want to keep it at 24 bit (until i burn it) but i guess i don't understand the signal route from the USB device to the software. If I get drivers with the MBOX, will everything stay 24 bit, from the inputs, through the USB, to the software, and back out the MBOX to monitors? Is there any reason to upgrade the SB live! card if I don't use it to record/playback, or does it somehow degrade the audio to 16 bit? Am I baked? Ted

Just two, really. Guitar/Bass, or two mics, preferably with pre-amp. I was leaning toward the aardvark 2496 till i read all the negative stuff about cakewalk pro., or maybe m-audio card, but was wondering about a USB interface, because i'm just solo. thanx
