Look Mom, I can play!
I am having a real frustrating time loading USB drivers for my Evolution 361C midi controler. When I switch on the keyboard, I get a message saying that it is an unknown USB device..in spite of my loading all the drivers. So I then load the updated drivers from the Evolution web site and then point my "Update Driver" window at it in systems devices...and it says that no driver is there, or that the driver does not contain information about my device.

Of course, the driver is there, I can see it (evolusb.inf). I have tried loading it from my HD, from the CD and from a floppy. I have d/l'd the latest driver and still no joy.

And here's the strange thing. This happened exactly the same in win 98 and its also happening now I have win xp. Could it be a Bios or a mobo problem? (ASUS P4PE) Bios is set up to auto recognise legacy usb. Could it be a security setting? Its just so strange that the problem is common to win 98 and XP.

Evolution tech support also don't know what else to suggest, so I throw myself on the collective techie knowledge of this BBS.:)

That's not the driver,.inf is a file that will open in note pad.
The driver file is .drv, and may also use .dll and .sys files.
When you download the driver it is probably zipped in a packet that expands into a new folder.Check that folder for the amount and types of files.
Also try a different version, perhaps the download is corrupt.

Did you try installing any other USB devices.?

LATER!

AR, thanks for your reply. All other USB drivers load okay (i.e. my digital camera). I have got the USB driver files from off Evolutions web site and on a CD. As you would expect, the web based drivers are a later version. Each file has 6 files, some are .dll and one is .drv. (evolusb.drv to be precise). When I point the update driver tool at it, the message comes back saying that the file contains no information on the hardware:eek:

Evolution tech support can't understand it either, they say they have never seen this problem before. It was the same problem with my last mobo, bios and win 98. So all that has changed ...and still this problem:mad:

I am desperate to use my USB controler with low latency now I have the win xp loaded up with wdm drivers. Kontakt awaits me, within HS2002 but for now, its grounded:(

I had hell trying to upgrade my Evolution UC-16. Excatly the same problem as you...

To tell you the truth I really don't know what I did to get it to work. I think I removed the "USB Audio Device" completely, physically removed the UC-16 from the computer, rebooted 3 or 4 times, and tried again.

You're running XP, right?

Dual boot win 98 & xp. Same problem with both o/s:(

Success....well, almost:rolleyes:

I tried booting win xp in safe mode and there it recognised the k/board as a composite USB device and loaded the win xp default driver. So at least now I can get connected to HS2002 with Kontakt and make music:D

Neither win xp or win 98 recognises the Evolution drivers though :(

Have you mailed Evolution about this? If more people report it as a problem, maybe they need to do something else about it (besides telling me that they coudln't "reproduce the problem")...

I emailed em once but got a stupid reply, you know, like, make sure your keyboard is pugged in and swithched on. So I called em after that a few times. Very helpful, but no solution.:(

I know your pain. I was there... :(

But to comfort you, there's very little difference between the Evolution drivers and the Microsoft "USB Audio Device" driver. But if you work with two programs that need to use the MIDI ports at the same time, the Microsoft driver will crash your system. But as long as you only use Sonar for sequensing and controlling synths, then you're OK.

I think I remember one more thing I did to get the Evolution drivers to work. I removed the USB Audio device in Safe mode? You've done that? Right! Unplug your keyboard. Start in Normal Mode. Reboot and start in Safe Mode again. Now connect your keyboard. WinXP tells you that it has found an USB Audio Device. Then you just follow the instructions for installation of the drivers. After you're done (let's hope it tells you that the drivers work for once) reboot in Normal mode. I think this is what I did...

Moskus, I think I am going to be okay with the MS driver as I will only use HS2002 with kontakt & Battery as plug in Dxi's.

If I feel brave enough, I might give your method a go.:) Thanks for your help and advice.:)

Paul, I followed these instructions. Have u seen them??

Windows XP:
Plug in the Evolution controller and turn it on.
Windows will automatically install WDM drivers for the controller.
NB: The controllers will work fine with these inbox drivers.
If you wish to update to the Evolution drivers:
1.Open the Control Panel by clicking on Start/Control Panel.
2.Double click on the "System" program item.
3.Select the "Hardware" tab.
4.Click the "Device Manager" button.
5.Click on the ‘+’ next to ‘Universal Serial Bus Controllers’.
6.Check to see if the heading ‘USB Composite device’ appears.
7.Double-click on the ‘ USB Composite Device’ item.
8.Select the "Driver" tab, and click the "Update Driver..." button.
9.When the Hardware Update Wizard commences, select to “Install from a specific location
(Advanced)”. Click “Next”.
10.Select the option “Don't search, I will choose the driver to install”, click “Next”.
11.click on “Have Disk”, then “Browse” and select the folder you unzipped the drivers in to -
click open.
12.Select the Evolution USB Driver and click “Next”.
13.A warning that the driver has not passed Windows logo testing will come up. Ignore this and
click “Continue Anyway”.
14.Windows will copy files and then two things will occur:
a) The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard will display a screen indicate it has finished installing the
software for this device and requesting you to click the "Finish" button.
b) The Found New Hardware Wizard will now report it has detected an Unknown Device.
15.Click the "Finish" button on Upgrade Device Driver Wizard screen.
16.Repeat steps 9 to 15, to install the MIDI driver. If you are asked what type of hardware you
are trying to install, select 'Sound Video and Game Controller'.

You know... that's what he's been doing all along. I know due to his error-message... ;)

Well, I don't think that's what he's been doing all along. Not exactly at least. There is some little tricky difference in what you assume they're telling you. You kind of get where they're going to and start hitting buttons and browsers but there's a tiny little difference. I forgot what it is though. :)

Anyway, I had the same experience. But if you follow the instructions, it works....strangely enough. LOL :)

I shall try to find out what the tricky part was. I just can't remember...

OK, I remember:

10.Select the option “Don't search, I will choose the driver to install”, click “Next”.

THIS is the important tricky thing...so please watch this spot. I personally ignored it the first 5 times....I thought: I'll tell XP where the inf file is, so XP should know where to find the driver. Beep, wrong. You've got to tell XP everything! :D LOL

Hope it works. It did for me.

Well thanks for your input guys but Moskus is of course right..as he usually is:)

Johnjoe/pedullist, I followed those instructions exactly. And then I tried to point the browser to the actual file where the driver was...and it still did not recognise it:( No amount of persuading pointing, cajoling, etc would make xp recognise the damn driver. So I gave up and used the ms driver:rolleyes:
