That's not quite correct. There is no FireWire 600. There's just 400, 800, and 3200.

You're right; I misspoke. I was thinking of 400 on a six-pin cable, which is just 400 plus power. I should have said 4-pin, 6-pin, etc.

Again, suppose you guys can talk me into Firewire, which interface is then suited for my whishes? I'm so affraid of my cheap laptop firewire...

No.

I don't think it's an issue of "talking someone into" firewire - it's just another option. If you were planning a setup in which you needed many inputs at once, I would absolutely recommend FireWire over USB. When you're recording a track or two at a time, USB will do just fine. The units you originally mentioned are good. The Tascam 144 would probably be my pick, but that's because I've owned several Tascam units over the years and always had good experiences with them.

You have a lot to choose from. If you're wanting to stick with the PT theme and M-audio you could get a Firewire solo unit really cheap off ebay new.

TC Electronic Konnekt 8

The last unit has the best specs but almost never works...

Pretty much. In theory, it should have the best sound, but in practice, you can't hear it for all the pops and crackles. :D :D :D

I bought an Emu 0404 but I wish I didn't
Can't really handle a guitar. No true Hi-Z input. Loss of high freqs.
Otherwise very good, but not guitar suited.

Don't know if a Tascam can handle guitar? Clean samples anyone?

And maybe mike samples too, because I would like to keep the high E-mu mike standard...
