So I bought a USB 2.0/Firewire notebook card. The firewire is recognized and works, but the USB 2.0 gives me this error in device manager: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I've tried every driver combination and I am by no means stupid when it comes to fixing computer software problems... I've also restored to when I first got the laptop and back again. No luck at any point in time. To top it off, the card works great on my girlfriends laptop... I just plug in and it's ready for anything. This laptop is almost brand new so what the hell. If anyone knows how to fix this dreaded Code 10 error PLEASE HELP!

Specs:

Compaq Presario 2100 : #2104US
AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+
704 MB of RAM

I've already talked to 5 different compaq tech support guys for hours and no one could do anything. In addition, I've updated BIOS, and tried updating the drivers with every combination possible. I've narrowed it down to not being a driver problem, and not being a PCMIA problem... but something limiting the USB capabilities.

Thanks!
Brian

I've service a number of those notebooks; they are notorious for having bent PC card pins in the socket. Look inside the socket and make sure none of the pins are bent. It is possible to fully insert the card even though the socket has bent pins. If even so much as one pin is not making contact, the card will not function properly. Beyond that, it is also possible that the card may not be compatible with that Presario notebook.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

One more thing, if it happens that a pin is bent, unless you're comfortable taking it apart you should send the notebook in for service. Straightening those pins is not an easy job, too much warping and they will easily snap off.

Thanks a lot... they're picking it up on monday for service, hopefully they can fix it up.
