What are you looking to buy?

There are many specialist shops here, and some will ship anywhere.

Well a Gibson Les Paul is my desire. For the time being anyway :D

You can get new or second-hand from several of the 'department store' type shops here such as Guitar Center or MARS Music. They are more tuned to selling new stuff heavily discounted, but usually have some used gear.

They are very much like the big shops in England - generally not very knowledgable sales people - and may not ship to UK.

The best way to go is to deal with a long-established guitar dealer here, most of whom are very familiar with shipping instruments abroad. If you're looking for a vintage or really nice instrument, try the following websites:

www.gruhn.com
George Gruhn's store in Nashville, Tennessee is extremely reputable - they will give you a very accurate description of any instrument over the phone, if they say mint condition, it means mint condition, if they say it's a 1954 Les Paul, it's a 1954 Les Paul, they'll send it to you and you have 24-hour approval. If you don't like it, send it back. All you pay is the shipping.

www.mandoweb.com
Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island, New York. Leans more towards acoustics, but all the same things apply to Stan Jay's store as George Gruhn's. Extremely reputable and the same high quality services.

I have dealt with both of them long distance and they were both totally professional and I got exactly what they said I was going to get, and what I paid for.
I have also sent back instruments to both and they didn't even ask why. I said I didn't like it, and they said send it back.

www.williesguitars.com
Willie's American Guitars is in St. Paul, Minnesota. They are much smaller than either Gruhn's or Mandolin Brothers, but the same commitment to quality and service exists there. I always dealt with Nate when I lived there, but I'm sure they're all good.

Email me if you have any more questions, I'm happy to help.

Mental; Rotherham hey, about half an hour from me.

I know why you are searching abroad for cheaper prices in the US, I've done the same. You get people on this forum complaining about prices that are still at cheapest a third more in the UK (generally speaking).

Beware however. When the guitar arrives at your door you'll be hit for a nice tax payment (expensive-relative to price of goods). Then you've got the added problem as I'm sure your aware of, if any problems arise (shippment/when you've got it etc (dealing with a supplier in the US is going to be hard)).

Face it, you'll have to pay the extra like the rest of us over here.

I'd say it was closer to 15! hehe, the city of steel eh? where abouts?

Anyway, cheers for rising that point, i didn't think of the tax dilema. I must admit over the past few days i have been saying to myself, face it and pay up the extra money. I have thought about getting a loan, but i think it's alittle extortionate for a guitar! My second, and best idea is to get a job @ a guitar shop and try and get a discount, so today I applied @ FOX's in MeadowHell.

You got MSN?

regards

Hey Mantal; you realise that even with a discount at Foxes you'll still be paying more than you should. the Foxes in the centre of Sheffield closed for this reason.

What exact model are you looking to purchase and what price are you aiming for. I get huge discounts in a couple of shops in Sheffield as I buy so much equipment; I'll tell you how much I could get one for. (I'm just concerned as you should not be thinking about Foxes prices).

You might want to check out this online shop based in Newcastle; it's about the best online shop for music I've found:

PS. Yes I've got MSN.
