US-428 and USB 2.0 compatibility

The tascam manual that comes with us428 states you cannot use a different usb cable other than the one that comes with the unit. Yet- the tascam site states you can extend the cable to 16 feet- anything beyond that requires an amplifier. I am still confused, but the main question is the us428 compatible with usb 2.0? Where do you buy this special usb 2.0 cable? I cannot access the tascam site to find out much. Just wondered if anyone had any experience or ideas.
 
I haven't heard anything about the US428 and USB2.0

The company that makes the US428 for Tascam is Frontier Design Group. They should know what the plans are for USB2.0

I'll ask them and put their response on the board, if they answer.
 
No USB 2.0

I had the same question a few months ago... and I talked with Tascam directly and they told me that there is NO plans for a 2.0 version... also, the 428 firmware cannot be upgraded to USB 2.0...

So, there will be NO USB 2.0 support for the 428
There might be a new model out, but will not be based on the 428...

In regards to the cable, you can use any extension cable.. I use a belking GOld... no problem, everything fine.

The techs from fronteir said the same thing, but they also asked me to give them a feature list for a 428-like product with 2.0 support.
 
Grumble, grumble.

I must be in a grumbling mood today.

Why do we need USB 2? I thought that's what firewire was for. Firewire works just fine, but Micro$oft is back at its old "Embrace and extend" practices.

Perhaps a more useful comment for the thread: be wary of the first USB 2 devices. Firewire audio has taken some time to get down well and still has some kinks to work out. I'd wait for the first (and second) reports to come in before dropping a load of cash on a new USB 2 audio device.

Yes.. Firewire is better than USB 2.0

Yes.. I totally agree with you.. FireWire is a more mature technology in the music field... BUT.. USB 2.0 has more money to lure Microsoft, Intel and Dell... so do not expect a Firewire "default" option in a PC near you soon...
