I know many people have posted about this issue, and I've searched throughout this forum and other forums as well, but have not found a solution and this is my last desperate move. When I have the US-122 plugged into my XP computer, everything would be ok for about 23-30 minutes and then all of a sudden, I would get a quick flash of the blue screen (much writing on it, but can't read cuz it's too quick) and the computer would restart.

I have been able to record a few times before and I love the sound quality, but this compatability issue is killing me. I have the updated drivers 3.30, the latest Microsoft Service Pack, and I use CEP 2.1. I don't think the software is an issue because I may not even be using it when it crashes. For all you US-122 users out there with XP and who DID have success, what do you exactly do or have different that makes this work?? Am i just one of the unlucky ones who have no choice but to throw the US 122 away? If you are an Windows 2000 user, please tell me if you have any problems with US-122, because if I really have to, I would downgrade my system to Win 2000, just so I can get this US122 to work. Thank you in advance.

Well to me it sounds like a installation/driver issue something in your computer might be having compatability issues. I can use this for example I have one of the all in one chipsets but then I installed a soundblaster soundcard, and also my 428. My pc kept crashing similar to your problem so I uninstalled the soundblaster and everything worked fine. U might be having a problem similiar to that.

I am not sure if this is your problem, but several posts have appeared on this forum about problems with the US-122 & XP when Windows goes into hibernate mode (which would probably happen at around 30 minutes with factory power settings). Make sure you set your power settings to "always on" and disable your screensaver before recording. I personally have not experienced any problems with my US-122 using XP Pro using either the bundled Cubasis or Cubase SE. Hope that helps.

thanks for all the feedback, but i think i still have the problem. I uninstalled my soundcard (but this does keep reinstalling itself after restart) and like scrubs said, I disabled the hibernate/standby mode, to have my power setting "always on." I was actually able to record and use longer the US-122 on my CEP software, but after a while, that blue screen would pop up again all the sudden and my cpu would restart. Any other feedback from XP users would be appreciated, I am so desperate to get this to work. Are there any US-122 users that have Win 2000?? Would this be a definite solution for me?

Bummer...What are your system specs? Also, do you have any other USB devices connected? If so, disconnect those. If you don't have a fast computer, you may also want to disable virus software, broadband internet connection, etc while recording. Other than that, I am out of ideas. Maybe some of the computer folks can help more.

I guess there is always Tascam/Steinberg support...have you checked for new drivers on their websites?

I dunno my labtop specs on the top of my head, but it's a new Sony labtop i got a few months ago.. 512 RAM i believe, 50Gigs.. I'm not much of a computer person. I appreciate the feedback, but can you guys tell me what driver you guys are using from Tascam? Right now, the one i'm using is the latest driver from tascam which is 3.30. I read in some forums that the older driver might actually work for XP users. Are you guys are using 3.30 or 3.24 driver?

I am using driver ver 0.3.2.1 dated 2/13/2003

US 122 XP conflict

I also have had the blue screen problem ever since I installed the US 122 drivers. If I don't unplug the unit at night, I will always find a blue screen when I go to my computer in the morning. Recently I couldn't reboot and had to go to safe mode. I updated my video and audio card drivers not knowing what is the problem. Now I can reboot from the blue screen, but this shouldn't happen. For you techies, here are the blue screen messages:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Tecnical information:

*** STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X00000060, 0X0000002, 0X00000000, 0XF5039F39)
*** US122.sys - Address F5039F39 base at F5030000, DateStamp 3e4be686

Any other suggestions not already posted? m.

exactly what i'm looking for.

just got a new pc (p4 3.0ghz - 1gb etc...)- for recording - have been using an older dell previously sop thought maybe the probs weren't with the US-122.......but as it turns out it is!!! didn't like to see a blue screen of death on my new pc which had only been on for about an hour! kras i have exactly the same prob as you except mine says - asomething about the "bugcode_usb_driver" and then all the codes etc... relating to system drivers etc....this sucks!!! I'M planning on selling this anyway and getting a terratec phase 88 pci rack - nice 8 channel card with two pre's and 2 midi channels. I'm running xp home which i have a feeling could be the problem.......are you guys that aren't having probs running xp pro?

the us-122 alot more expensive than comparable pci card with the same amount of inputs - the usb and breakout box are supposed to make it user friendly and easy for ppl new to pc recording.....apparently not - tascam have screwed up here if it's a seriously common error for it to crash windows xp on alot of systems - which let's face it is a widely used system.

the other thing that bugs me is that the us-122 is my only real soundcard - i got this system without a soundcard so no conflicts would occur and didn't cost that little bit extra to put in a useless soundcard - now i realise the us-122 is the prob - i pretty mad!!!

can anyone e-mail me the older drivers or are they still on the tascam website??

thanx - and i promise never to buy tascam again!! even if it is the os on the pc!

ben

I would say again THIS SUCKS! Think of all the time you wasted goofing around with this wannabe PC recording crap that you could have spent PLAYING ,WRITING and RECORDING music. Why do they put this out if it DOESN'T WORK!

so do u think by using a non usb keyboard and mouse the problem MIGHT be solved?

I really have no idea. I am by no means a computer whiz. I do think that if you have multiple USB devices connected to a single port through a hub, the PC can have problems recognizing the correct device. So, I would suggest not using a hub with the US-122 (not sure if this was the original poster's problem or not). When I am tracking, I disconnect everything I don't need from the system, but I am not sure this really improves the quality of my recordings. I have not had any problems with my US-122 to date (fingers crossed). I do use a wireless keyboard and mouse that connects via USB that I leave connected to another port while tracking.

US 122 XP conflict

well, it is some consolation that others have the same problem, but not much! i have many usb connections on - keyboard, mouse, scanner, printer, but this blue screen happens even when none are being used, they are only plugged in. i also have my tascom usb plugged in to the back of my dell computer (2.0) not a hub. i have xp home, but this shoudn't be the problem. when i first had the problem and finally got through to teac/tascom (they almost never return a message - email or phone) they basically said disconnect periferals and other software - really great driver - huh? maybe tascom should throw in a free computer with every us 122 purchased so it could be dedicated to just this device. how can they get away with this? how can microsoft be notified so they could build in a warning that the driver you are about to install is not compatible???

US 122 and XP

one more thought - i am beginning to think that norton anti-virus may be part of this problem as i get a blue screen after a scan. do others with the blue screen problem also run norton?

i always disable my network and anti-virus software before going into my recording stuff. i get all kinds of hiccups and dropouts when that stuff is running.

Hopefully some help...

OK, I'm not trying to piss anybody off by having a working US 122! :D , just trying to show the environment mine is working in, and then give my suggestions.

I've been using the 122 with CEP 2 on XP Home (2.6gb celeron, 512mb ram, 5400rpm 40gb drive) for a few months with no problems at all. I am using the original drivers that came with it. I have no other USB devices running. I am using Norton AV. Many, many, times I have gone tracking and forgotten to turn off the screen saver and AV, but still no drop-outs, popping, skips, or anything. I disabled the original soundcard on the motherboard after I installed the 122 (it has never tried to reinstall itself). I leave the 122 connected all the time (it's now my only soundcard), even when I turn off the PC every night, and boot it up every morning. I'm really happy with the sound quality and overall performance of the Tascam.

When I bought my US 122, Microsoft was "automatic updating" everyones XP system with Service Pack 2. Several of my friends had all kinds of problems with their PC's after updating. I also read several posts about people having a US 122 that worked fine before installing SP2, and then getting the blue screen of death after. So, I never installed SP2 (turned off automatic update so it won't keep bugging me, check manually for any updates I may want). This might be the reason I've never had problems.

It is possible to uninstall SP2 by following the directions on this page at the Microsoft site. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350

But it might be a better idea to do a "Clean Boot" troubleshoot to actually find out where the conflict or incompatability is. Here are the instructions for the simpler Clean Boot aimed at finding software problems: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310353

Here's the more thorough advanced Clean Boot session: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316434

What I would most likely do first though, is uninstall the US 122 drivers and software, turn off my computer, do a clean boot start up, and reinstall the US 122 disc while in clean boot. This way you can install the tascam software/drivers with no other possible conflicts running. Shut the computer off again, boot up normally (with the 122 already connected to the USB) and try it. If it works, great! If not then do the clean boot troubleshooting.

It may sound like a lot of trouble, but you would only have to do it once, and it might be easier than trying to return the 122 and buy something else. Let me put it this way... I can consistantly get the crappiest Roxio CD burning software to work on any computer by doing a clean boot install. So the US 122 would be a cakewalk (no pun intended  ).

I hope this helps!

thats what I'm talkin' bout.....

i been reading on PC recording for months and never get to the purchase part.
Guys at GuitarCenter don't even like me to come in anymore and ask 100 redundant questions.

Basically 2 options.
1)Standalone- almost all HD's these days.
2)PC

Problems
Standalone
1) HD shares all the buttons, so you have to ctrl/shft/select scroll/shft/ctrl/scroll...just to turn up the treble!! and if you don't get it, repeat.

- Tascam DP01 may have improved this.

PC
1) No refund on software $$
2) Computer compatability and crashes...almost every thread, every fhkng type.
3) Need a dedicated PC with USB2, Cache,Ram,Rom,..blah,blah,blah

Kevin, I agree 100%...what kind of creativity can you get when spending your time re-booting and re-installing.

sounds like a sht product to me. why do they sell it? They make money, and with no refunds.....?

TimLee40:

don't uninstall your soundcard, just disable it. if you uninstall it, its just going to keep coming back, since you can't remove it from the laptop.

if you are having problems do the following:
1. close all the other little doo-dads you got running.
2. turn off hibernation.
3. disable your laptop sound card.
4a. disable your network card.
4b. turn off your virus protection (since you turned off the network you don't need it)
5. last but not least, make sure you've got Processor Scheduling set for background services

I've got a US122 running fine, but I use Win 98.

1. Use cheap software, like n-tracks.
2. That is mostly because there aren't threads about how great life is. Not often, anyway.
3. There's a lot of hype there. If I were specing a PC today, I'd talk to somebody like Andvanced Design and ask for hot rod specs from a year ago, and build that, 'cuz it'd be pretty cheap and have plenty of poop for what I do.

There are a lot of people recording with the PC that the rest of the family uses for everything else.
