For anyone interested, I made Uru's song Bittersweet available for download on MP3
http://www.mp3.com/uru

The story behind it: We had one day to do some tracking in another studio (while ours is build), and did 3 songs in that day, as demo's.
This one was a one take job, with backing vocals and acoustic guitar lead added subsequently.
The players are some of my favorites, Jota Morelli (Al Jarreau) on drums, Mel Brown (Gladys Knight, Marc Anthony) bass, and Marcello (Banditos) on guitar.
Technically it was a pain, tracked on 2", then transferred to Pro Tools using standard Digidesign 888/24 converters and Pro Tools' internal clock.
If this had been done with good converters and an accurate external clock the sound quality would have been in an entirely different league.
With hindsight - I would have been better off tracking direct into Pro Tools rather than losing a generation by tracking to 2" and transferring without good converters and a good clock.

Hope you like it.

I really like that guitar part. What kind of reverb is on that? Or is it just a killer room?
You have inspired me to PAY to have my vocals recorded by someone who knows what they're doing :).

H2H

Definately no killer room! Quite the opposite unfortunately.
I recorded the guitar with its own BB pick-up, and with a Telefunken U47 through a vintage Neve pre - and used the pick-up - that should tell you something about the room :(
The reverb on the guitar is from the TC MegaReverb plug-in, which is by far my favorite reverb unit. Same for the vocals, the TC VoiceStrip and MegaReverb.
Vocals were recorded using the U47 / Neve pre combo. I think they lost to much in the transfer, so I think I'll redo them with the Stayne MagMike as soon as the studio is ready.

Beautiful Song there.
My only gripes were the tone on the bass. I would've preferred a stand-up sound instead of that picked electric sound. Also there was a bit of tape hiss that surprised me considering a 2" machine was involved. Was the slight sibilance across the vocals and the drums due to messing with EQ after the fact or was it tracked like that?
Overall a killer job. I forwarded the tune to the QC Manager where I work (yeah- the tune was echoing from the halls where I work on both ends of the plant). His review:
Hot, Very Hot!
I'd like to see how you miced those drums. And that nylon guitar. That BB pickup is (excuse my ignorance) what sort of design? Sweet!
I'm only a couple of hours to the south and have friends in SB so I have an excuse to drive up. BTW: one of them works for LightWave Systems in the SB area- have you auditioned instruments using their novel pickup design?

As far as I'm concerned the sound really sucks, it was ment as just a demo - and then everyone liked it so I mixed it a bit.
I left it to the studio concerned to do the transfers - big mistake - when I questioned them about it I heard the engineer sync'd it up "by ear". Something near impossible.

Apart from the vocals, which went U47 - Neve - tape, the rest went Oram pre's and console, badly maintained - hence the hiss.

I'm thinking of getting Jota back in as soon as the studio is ready and re-doing the drums, which will change the whole thing considerably.

I'm very impressed with the LightWave system, especially for acoustical instruments and electric bass. I still have to hear it for electric guitar, as I think a lot of the "cool" sound comes from the magnetic pick-up characteristics. Funny you mentioned that, I just completed a review of their businessplan for a venture capital corporation.

The pick-up was a barcus-berry single coil pick-up, another local company.

When you come up this way please come and visit! That would be nice. I'm here every day - totally burned out on building and desperate to do some music

Man that's good.

Low lights and Uru...... luuuuuuv muzik.

WOw,

this song rocks. I mean, it totally world class.
Uru is a very great writer

sjoko2,

First off, thanks for making it downloadable. Very nice, this chick can sing. Mix sounded very good on my speakers.

Noticed some flutter on acoustic, I have heard this once before on a download, and don't know why.

Only other complaint, voice upper end drums and cymbals sounded a little hard.

Also, agree with Doc, about the bass.
