Hi all, I'm new to these forums and could seriously do with some help. I've decided to buy my daughter a very small set up that allows her to do a couple of things, these are:

Sing in her bedroom through a small set of speakers with a backing track off am iPod playing through the same speakers. The speakers would be permantly placed in her bedroom.

Record her songs on the computer downstairs.

Now, my theory is to get a mixer, a mic and speakers and of course, the relevant cables. As I said the speakers would be housed permantly in her bedroom, when she wants to record I intend to take just the mixer and the mic downstairs to plug into the computer, the sound would be then played through my computers speakers.

Now I know this is a basic set up and it needs to be on a basic budget.

Could you tell me if the following speakers and mixer would be suitable and if they set up together easy and also if there are any tips setting them up.

Mixer - Alto zephyr ZMX52 (already have)

Speakers - Edifier R1600T Studio Plus 2.0 Monitors

I will get just a basic mic to start and will probably upgrade it in the new year at some point, will those two pieces of kit be ok?

I'm building a new pc in January so of anyone could recommend a cheap sound card which could do this job I would be grateful also.

Thanks in advance

James

You need an audio interface. If your plan was to send the signal from the mixer to your computer via the line-in jacks on your computer, the built-in soundcard in your computer will be the weak link in the sound chain.
Other than that, it sounds like you've got it planned out - except you will need headphones, too, for tracking with a mic. Using speakers only, you'll get feedback. Same thing may happen in her room when she's practicing.
