Who can tell me what DC offset is, why it is important, and how it is advantageous to adjust it? Does it have to do with current noise? I run a very cheap soundcard, so every noise-reducin' advantage i can get would help.

Typically total silence will be recorded as a zero value for voltage. It is possible that a bad ground or something might result in the waveform being offset from zero, and therefore the waveform will play back as a steady hum. If you adjust it you basically adjust the entire waveform up or down relative to zero, and so if there's a DC offset present in the signal, it can be compensated for.

Try it ans see if it helps your recording less noisy.
