Upgrading woes

When you upgrade from SONAR 1.x to SONAR 2.0, they recommend that you leave SONAR 1 there and let it install the new stuff into another directory; then later, run SONAR 1.x's unistaller to remove it if you want.

So today I tried that and the uninstaller crashed repeatably, each time it got to the point where it felt it should ask me if I wanted to letit remove some files in shared directories. It finally ran through to completion but without asking about those files at all, and as a result I no longer have my SONAR DX audio effects or DXi instruments.

Other than that it seems like stuff works but...

Has anyone else had any troubles with doing things this way? If you've been through it and restored everything to a perfect state and have any tips, let me know.

This installer stuff seems to get worse each year rather than better. I'd almost rather they just gave me the files and the needed registry entries and let me do it manually...
 
I can't remember offhand but it seems to me I uninstalled 1 before installing 2.
Did you delete your audio.ini file and run your wave profiler again?
 
No, it still seems to see all my devices like it did before, it just deleted all the DXi and DX stuff, and probably all the MIDI plug-ins too, and probably the drum styles for the Session Drummer and who knows what else...
 
That's so weird, I just got back from my studio and just did the same thing and the exact same thing happened. I was able to finally get Sonar 1 uninstalled after a couple tries, but then I had to reinstall Sonar 2 on top of itself. I lost a couple of tracks from two of my projects as well. But all is working OK, I just don't understand it. :(
 
Do you know, You are both correct and I am astonished nobody (to my knowledge) has ever remarked upon it before. Uninstalling Sonar 1 XL does indeed delete the DXIs that came with it ie
Alien Connections Revalver SE DXi
Tassman 2.0 DXi
Dreamstation DXi
LiveSynth Pro DXi
Virtual Sound Canvas DXi

Sonar 2XL comes with 1 DXi and 2 DX effects ie
FXexpansion DR-008 Drum Sampler DXi
Sonic Timeworks Mastering EQ
Sonic Timeworks Compressor-X

Leaving Sonar 1XL installed gives you all these but unistalling it only leaves the Sonar 2XL Dx and Dxi freebies.

Okay now this is getting into familiar territory for me.
When you installed Sonar 2 did you check the options for file instalation?
Sonar2 did not recognize my some not all of my previously installed dxi's.I made a call to tech support and they sent me a patch which helped Sonar recognize these.I actually posted a thread way back about this but at the time got no replies.

I am going to a Sonar seminar Monday here in Milwaukee and will definately let them know (bitch about it).

There does seem to be erratic results with file migration on upgrades.

I am also going to request that their techs visit this site occasionally to save us some hassles,but I won't hold my breath for this to happen.

The good thing is they can't blow this off as an isolated incident.
 
Sound like good ideas acidrock. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned to Cakewalk before to check out this board for some of the more usual complaints. This is really a strange problem. Is there any way to get back those Dxis that were lost from version 1?
 
I recieved a patch from cakewalk tech support which helped sonar recognize my dxi's.
Unfotunately you may have to take the same route.
The dxi's were still in the directory but would not open or be recognized by sonar.

No, I never had the problem (or never noticed it) that they wrote that patch for -- my DXi were definitely removed from the system.

No wait -- the DXi are there, after all... they were all in their own directories -- it's the Cakewalk effects that are all gone, except for the FX Pad that I downloaded from them for free recently and was not on the SONAR 1 installer's list for removal...
 
An update-- I finally heard from Cakewalk technical support, and they said the 2.0 installer offers some options to install or not install certain components. Sure enough, it does. It was pretty painless to run it leave Audio FX checked and MIDI Fx checked and uncheck everything else. My FX are back, and life is sweet again. Now if only DavidK would send me the rest of those violin tracks...
