Ok I know a little about computers but I would like some help with this little project.

I am upgrading my system, new mobo/cpu and case and would like to know what you guys think about my little project. I do not have a ton of money to blow on it but very much need an upgrade.

I am thinking about this mobo/cpu set

Asus K8U-X AMD Socket 754 DDR MB with Athlon64 3000+

I want to rackmount my machine...to make it a bit more easy to handle and secure, I will be doing shows with it. So here is that.

I have all of the other stuff, hds..ect.

do you think all of this will come togather fine?..or do you think I should try something else?

thanks

I'd personally say look for a mobo (if athalon is your choice) that's an athalon 64 3400+. But I think you'll be fine with the 3000.

why is that?, is there a big jump fro 3000 to 3400?

thanks john

Also, if you need to buy one now, I would get the Socket 939 mobo's for AMD. This gives you the faster versions of the Athlon64's (I think SanDiego cores???) and also lets you upgrade to the Dual Core X2's in the future. With socket 754, you're stuck with one line of processors.

If you can wait a little while, you might check out AMD's new socket that's coming out soon, I think it's called like M2 or something like that. Even if you don't get M2 hardware, you could then probably save some money on the 939 stuff. But anyways, my overall advice, go 939, not 754.
