I want to upgrade from pro tools 6.4 to the new 7.3. I downloaded the upgrade and when I go to install it on my computer It tells me to uninstall the old 6.4 version. If I uninstall the old version will that erase all the songs and audio files I have or will that just erase the hardware?

You needn't worry about erasing your hardware, it will exist no matter what sort of uninstall you do. To be sure of keeping your projects intact, I suggest backing them up to a removable media before uninstalling your pro-tools. Make sure to save the actual wav files, as well as the pts files.
Hope this is of use to you.

If you're using ProTools, you should have your sessions (including the audio, etc.) on an external harddrive. You should only be running the software off the C drive. It's recommended. If you have the session files on an external harddrive, this will prevent them from ever being erased. Having the sessions on your C drive will eventually (over time) cause wear to the C drive, because of the amount of information required for the writing and re-writing of sound files.

You can find a good harddrive for about $100 or so.

If you have a D drive, move the sessions over there, and then uninstall the original program version before you install the new one.

I'm getting ready to do this, myself. I don't believe uninstalling ProTools will delete the folder where you have your sessions, but it's better not to take the chance.

Yes, back up the files. If you have for some reason saved files into a ProTools folder that might be replaced in the upgrade, you might lose your files.
