I currently have Yorkville YSM2P actives. I think they kind of suck. They give no representation of the low end. They are lower end, so that's fine. I want to upgrade. WHat would you guys recommend? I have Logic Pro, a Mac Pro, and Firepod.

Cheers!

I have some original YSM-1's, which I like alot for refrencing in place of NS10s. My main set are KRK V8's, which have plenty of low for me. It depends on your budget really. I use a set of Dynaudio BM5A's and some ADAM A7's at work every day, and for the same cost the ADAMS smoke the Dynaudios IMO.

GC's across the country are blowing out the KRK V series for at or below cost because of the new VXT's (which I dont like, btw). You can pretty much get them for the same price as the RP's of the same size.

Thanks H2H.

Are the KRK's a significant step up from my Yorkvilles?

To be honest, Ive never heard the YSM2's. Ive had my YSM1's for so long that I really know them and like them quite a bit. I find that my V8's really compliment the YSM-1's, as in I hear them differently and it helps.

there's alot of guys saying the KRK V5's are a good deal on monitors, and translate well...I have had M-Audios BX8's for along time now, before MAudio was bought out by Digi (protools peeps), so I too have grown accustomed to my monitors, and the BX8's have a significant low end.

I'd like to try a pair of the Adams ribbon tweets...none in my area.

Perhaps your room needs acoustic treatment, especially bass traps.
Yep. I'd also make sure I didn't have my rig set up in a corner of my room and that my monitors are away from the rear wall.

Every time one hears "my monitors lack bass", that shuld automatically raise a red flag that the first suspect to look at is the room and the setup, not the monitors themselves. Those Yorkies may not have the most accurate bass in the world, but I'd bet a lunch that sticking anything else in the same location where you have the Y's now isn't going to sound much better at all because it's the room and the positiion that's sucking your bass, not your speakers themselevs.

VERY VERY true! i never thought rooms could make such a difference in sound!!!

i recently got an old pair of EVENT 20/20BAS monitors (great monitors!) and i have them set up real close to my rear wall, and one monitor is kinda pushed up in the rear corner of the room, while the other one was kinda in the middle of the room.

i noticed that for some reason, the speaker in the corner of the room was real bassy sounding, and the other one was a bit on the "thinner" side of sounds. I thought i was the speakers that was malfunctioning.......

but then i posted here in the forums, and southside came up with the answer and helped me out (thanks again!).........it was my poor placement of the speakers, and the room environment.

i moved the speakers, and they sound equal with each other, and sound great!

......monitor placement, and the room itself DO make the difference!

Room Treatment and moniter placement definetly plays a huge deal in what you're hearing. That being said you may wan't better moniters then the Yorkvilles. The best thing to do is goto a local music store that sells pro audio equipment and play some of your mixes across a handful moniters. Although this won't be entirely the same as hearing the moniters in your room you can get a decent idea of what they sound like. This is what I did when I bought my Event ASP8s which I felt more comfortable with then Dynaudio BM5as, JBL LSR4328Ps, Mackie HR824s and KRK V8s. Good Luck.

Peace,
Kyle

Blue Sky

After you fix your room, check out the Blue Sky EXO 2.1 system.

We've been using the Pro Desk and Media Desk in various studios and they are a great bang for the buck. The EXO is at a great price point and it allows you to dial in as much of the subs and mains as you need:
