It's typical for channel 1 to be played on the left and channel 2 to be played on the right. In the absence of a channel 2 input, you would only get left out to the headphone. The mono button should MIX the two channels to play on both ears. I'm not sure if that affects the headphone out though. It might only affect the outputs on the back of the unit.

You could always get a headphone preamp with a mono button. Presonus HP4 is what I use. I have a Samson Q5 too, but I haven't been able to offload it short of giving it away. They're both nice headphone preamps. The Q5 has a bit more umphh than the HP4. But the HP4 has MUTE and MONO and monitor attenuation. The Q5 has monitor pass through. The HP4 is useful for when the phone rings and you don't have time to hunt for those settings with a mouse.

Baring that you could always get a mono adapter / jack for your headphones. $5-ish at rat shack. Probably closer to $8-ish these days.

Yeah, hitting mono gives me sound in both ears when recording. The problem I have is that the progs I use to record sound still only record me in one channel.

The solution, temporarily, is just to use one channel which is generally fine for podcasting, but obviously I'd like the recordings to be better.
