Ok, so after reading hundreds of threads across the internet on upgrading the studio, I have come to detirmine that it is all subjective, dependent on your current studio set up.
I want to know whether to go for a new AD/DA and buy a new pre and monitor control system for it, or whether I just need new monitors. In terms of price range, $1000-$2500 (thinking RME fireface400 to the Aurora 8 with firewire). Any thoughts you have that would help me understand what needs to be fixed up, would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have a better idea, share it!
My room is acoustically treated, both with auralux diffusors and foam panels, as well as some DIY treatment for recording. It may be a little too treated, not sure how to notice now that i'm used to the sound...
Now, I'm an in-the-box mixing engineer, I only record my own vocals. So my importance lays from the box to the monitors. This is my current set up;
AT4047 / SM7b > FR saffire Pro 24 (pre / interface) > Cubase SX3 on a good pc > Interface again > HSM50s and KRK RP8s (krk for secondary listening)...
I can make good mixes on this set up, I know what I'm doing when it comes to engineering, I just dont have money to spend on every little peice of gear I want. But I'm getting to a point where I know something is holding me back from great mixes that isn't me.
