Upgrade mic or preamp

Say I'm using a at2020 and fast track. Which one would I upgrade first for better quality.
 
Always start at your source end and work your way through your signal path.
At least that is what I would do ..... for once you get a really great microphone then you'll note how inferior your micpre is, then your interface, then your DAW, then your monitors.

It's a never ending cycle but you'll eventually come to love your set up.
 
That reminds me, is a micpre in an interface because I'm confused about those two.
 
Depends which interface you are talking about.

Most of the USB interfaces have preamps and phantom power. Many of the firewire do too.

But stuff by Lynx, RME Hammerfall, Apogee, Prism, Lavril, and some of the MOTU line are strictly AD/DA converters without preamps.

The Lynx interfaces are outstanding, BTW. ;)
