Hey guys! :)

I have been using my AKG c2000 mic for vocals. Both growling and clean. I am pretty satisfied though, but I wonder if there is any suggestions with what I can upgrade to?

I hear a lot about the Shure SM 57 for example. But a lot of people say its just "ok" for vocals, not very good. I need a mic that can deal with loud growling, and clean vocals. I need warm sounding quality.

And lets say I switch to for example the SM 57, from my c2000. How huge will the difference be?

Thanks! :D

I think you have your model number and lettering mixed up.
Do you mean SM 7b? or SM 57?

I would look for an EV RE20 if I were you.

That's not an upgrade, Luucifer. If anything, it's a downgrade. The hard truth is- no one can tell you what will make you sound good (to you). You could spend $5000 on a main vocal mic and *hate* it. Al that we can do is recommend mics that work for *somebody*, and ones that are different. As the C2000B has got a bit of color, I would recommend trying something a little more transparent, like B.L.U.E. Spark or Bluebird. Or- consider a dynamic that *is* an upgrade, such as Shure SM7b or Sennheiser MD421. In the end, though, you may find out that there are multiple problems with the signal chain. It's not all about the mic. The room is huge. So is the preamp. So is mic technique. You may change up mics and not be any happier than you are right now. All I can say for sure is that C2000B is a perfectly good mic. Good luck.-Richie

Essentially, I agree with the above. An Elecrovoice RE-20 is one of the premier dynamic mics in the world. Like all of the really good dynamics, it has very low output, and therefore requires a preamp that can provide a ton of gain without a lot of noise. If you plug an RE-20 or an SM7b into a cheap preamp, you may not like the results. That is why I started by suggesting alternative affordable condenser mics. If you've got the preamp to feed them, RE-20 and SM7b are among the best vocal mics on the planet.-Richie
