Upgrade and new hardware issues

I have a PC running approx 1.6 ghz, 512 ram, soundmuffler err soundblster 16 or something similar. Use Gtr Tracks pro 3. I have finally run out of resources using plug-ins on individual tracks. To remedy I use subgroups for common items eg. reverb, delay etc. I try and save in line space for dynamics, which I use sparingly. This process workds well as it is basicly the old standard analog process. With that said I want to upgrade hardware to a point where resources (CPU) is not as taxed, my signal path is cleaner, more input options, just more more more! Here is what I am considering to help with these problems, granted one solution may not do all but may do more than another: 1 Alesis 8usb mixer (or like), new soundcard, maybe m-audio with on board DSP accelerator, or both over time. My reasoning is as follows: Mixer=more inputs, real mic pre, routing, lower latency? because of usb. New card=more inputs but hard to get to without patchbay, dsp accel, lower latency. Right now my priority leans toward mixer. With that in mind will mixers onboard converters (sound card) help me with my latency issues? Also will the PC card still be at issue? ( I realize I can disable it) and finally will the usb and mixer sound card help free resources once used by or restricted by the old sound card? Also, probably need more ram. Any comments? I could use the help. One last thing, I record a wide variety of stuff, voiceovers, guitar heavy rock ( multiple guitar tracks eat cpu, at least until you bounce), ambient, spoken word etc. Thanks great site, longtime lurker. :)

First, dump the soundblaster and get a better card, that should solve your latency problems right there. As far as I know,SB is'nt great for low latency stuff.
Second,do you have two hard drives?Usually having one hard drive for audio and one for programs will make your system more robust.
Your system spec's while not cutting edge, are certainly capable of handling a decent workload.
The RAM sure can't hurt,I imagine you can get another 512 for pretty cheap.

I agree with acidrock.

You need to put priotity, get better soundcard - the difference would be night and day, then add more RAM. Mixer can wait :)

Thanks Acidrock and Jason Argo:

I will move forward with new sound card and see if I can talk someone, maybe my ex wife into buying the mixer. Any reccomendations? I would be interested to hear from someone on their experiences with cards with on-board DSP acceleration. I like the idea of cards with multiple inputs, xlr, rca, etc.. (what is an etc... input) LOL. Thanks again for your help.

Mixer and soundcard.

For mixer, it deppends on your budget. I'll suggest get Mackie or Soundcraft. Very nice preamp, rough, and great sound quality. Their 10 - 12 input mixer would go >$500 :)

Soundcard, there's M-Audio Delta 1010 or 1010LT, C-Port, M-Port, Terratec 88MT, Inca 88, etc. etc. Just go to Computer & Recording forum below, and you'll get some more hints on soundcard. Just avoid using onboard soundcard.

ps. Stop calling me Jason or I'll get your ex-wife back to you... :p

:D :D :D

Sorry James, please forgive me. I don't want her back! Why avoid onboard sound card? :)

Reply to my own question. By onboard you mean present on-board card. Got it. Thanks.

Heh heh... :D

Yeah, soundcard built in onto motherboard is bad recording device. It's okay for listening songs on office break, but nay for recording. I use M-Audio Delta 1010LT which has 2 XLR input, 6 RCA input, 8 RCA output, and 2 digital I/O for total 10 in 10 out. 2 XLR input has switch enabled pre-amp for your mic. It's only downside is it's breakout cables placed on the back of PC, so you need to build extra patch cable to the front of your DAW. If you don't feel like it, Delta 1010 (without LT) comes with extra front panel bay.

Right on! I think I will use the Delta or the basic card I can't remember the name but I believe it has 2 rca (even though I hate rca's) and use the two mix out from the mixer to supply input. That way I can use mixer mic pre's, line in's etc.. and assorted outs on mixer and only use one extension. Less solder. I don't really relish the thought of building a snake, I gave that up when I changed jobs. I realize I can buy one even though have lots of connectors in the old tool box. I am also considering a move to Sonar 4 but will save that discussion for another post. Thanks again.

What time is it in Indonesia? It is soon to be Miller time in Mississippi.
