Unwanted duplication of previous track onto new track

Hi there, I hope someone can help me out on this...

I record onto Track 1, then wish to record something onto Track 2 while listening to Track 1 (vocals onto rhythm guitar, for example). However, Track 2 not only records my vocals, but it also records a duplicate of Track 1. I cannot get Track 2 to record only the new part without it also 'bouncing down' Track 1 onto it.

This is highly irritating as all you get is a build up of previous tracks onto each new track. This seems to be a simple problem, but I cannot fix it. Please help!

I'm using my 4-track as a mixer and have a very simple set-up. Lead out the back of the 4-track straight into the soundcard. I plug anything I'm recording into one of the 4 track inputs.

Anyway, the problem occurs even when I completely disconnect the mixer (4 track) so it seems an issue within the PC/software.

not knowing your complete setup....
but, a single output mixer will output all tracks unless muted.
you should send one track at a time into the program as to not re-record existing tracks.

This is one of the most common problems that are asked and usually the most simple to resolve.
Doing a search of the board should turn up the answer for you.

However, I'll post a link to a thread that most likely addresses your situation.
That thread would be right here.

If that doesn't help ... we can dig deeper.

I have just realised that this can be partially solved by moving the stereo pan of the track being listened to the the right. There is still a faint sound of the monitored track spilling onto the new track.

This is like recording on a four-track, and it's still not how cubase (or any other digital recording software) should behave! Help!

Maybe describe your signal routing in a bit more detail. How are you monitoring the previously recorded track(s) during overdub? Do they go back through the 4-track as well? Do the individual channels on your 4-track have direct outputs to the soundcard or are you using the main stereo output? Do you need to record through the 4-track channels or do you have an alternate source of preamps you can use? Alternately, maybe you need to find an alternate way to monitor your existing tracks from your soundcard--e.g., route to a home stereo or other similar device and listen over the headphone output when tracking overdubs.

But it seems to occur independent of how the monitoring is heard. As soon as I select any channel to be played during recording it will duplicate itself onto the new channel being recorded onto. This will happen even if I disconnect the four track, or turn the volume down on the PC.

Did you try the solutions in the thread that Crankz1 linked? Seems like that may be the issue.

Yep that's sorted it! Thanks a lot!
