Unmonitoring Loud Guitar While Recording

My setup is Guitar-->Line6 Pod-->Audigy soundcard line in-->Cubase SX-->Audigy line out--> hifi amp-->speakers.

The problem I have is the guitar is too loud while recording. The guitar is coming through the speakers the whole time, even when Cubase SX is closed down. I want to set up the guitar volume at the start and then stop monitoring the guitar and record it while hearing the other tracks at a reasonable volume.

Thanks in advance.

A small mixer and a soundcard that was actually made for recording would work wonders.

So a mixer would do it. Where in the chain would I put a mixer?

I've never used Cubase SX, but you may want to download REAPER and give it a shot.

It's "routing" is pretty easy. So, you can monitor whatever you would like, while recording..... including or excluding WHAT you are recording.

When I record guitars, drums, or other loud things that I can hear in the room, I never monitor them in the phones as well.

Also... if this is happening even when you are not in Cubase, it's probably due to your soundcard. It's probably just "always on" or always giving you back what your inputing into it.

I'm guessing your going to need to get a better audio interface, most people here frown upon using a souncard for this stuff.

You can get a budget USB or Firewire Pre-amp for $200 to $300.

I started with a M-Audio Mobile Pre, and really loved it. (Until I upgraded)

the problem isn't the recording program.. You have to turn off the monitoring on your sound card driver. (not exactly sure how with your card)

Go to volume control -> Options -> Properties -> Make sure line in is checked
Hit ok in that dialog and then mute in playback. Easy!
